    Fussy calf

We have a fall born Simmi heifer that refuses to eat out of a feed pan. The only thing she will eat out of is a long trough with our cow/calf pairs. She is a rocket and has gotten away with this at two shows and won her class both times. We do not want to haul a long trough to shows. Does anyone...

What does a judge look for in bucket calves/feeder steers?

We have a Dream Catcher x Monopoly steer that is a later April that we will show as a prospect for our county fair. We will also bring the cow and show as a cow/calf pair as well. We have been feeding the calf with mamma and he eats grain wonderfully that way. We will wean him just before state...

    County Fair Judges

We are certainly trying to be a part of the selection but in our county only one person selects the judge and contacts him or her. The fairboard just pays the judge. We did contact the fairboard and last night they were suppose to have a meeting to discuss the judge. I agree that it is hard to...

    County Fair Judges

Sizzler14: Thanks for the post, I do agree with you. Our family has no secrets to hide. Not all of our cattle are great. Our market steer went boom to early and is over finished and we know that and are not worried about him but I feel he still moves good enough for a county fair blue ribbon. We...

Clipping a cow for county fair

We have never really clipped a cow for county fair and we have two pairs this year. We are use to leaving hair on the heifers and steers so I think cows will be totally different. Any pointers would be appreciated.

    County Fair Judges

Showkidandlovinit - We do have our own breed which is Simmi and Simmi-Angus. We will play this judges game and our cattle always are attempted to look their best sometimes weather plays a part though. Are cattle had a coolbot last year for our fair and we tried just putting them under fans for a...

    County Fair Judges

I think this has all gone to far. I was not out to have people bash each other by this post. For that I am sorry!! I was simply asking for an opinion on ethics and maybe some suggestions of how other counties choose their judges. I was not trying to knock the judge but we feel he can get...

    County Fair Judges

Sorry if I offended anyone. We were not bashing the judge or their breed of cattle just saying it should not be right for a judge to be judging his own cattle when the registration papers trace back to his own herd. We don't care that the judge is judging his own breed. We are not saying that...

    County Fair Judges

Thank you for all your posts. We definitely see what you all are saying. The part we have trouble with is with such small numbers we have a very good chance of getting red ribbons. We have seen him judge many shows and he is very political. Cattle showing is very much a hobby of our families and...

    County Fair Judges

We have never ever left a show ring early and if we do not win a class my children always congratulate the winner. I think the main problem is the fact that we typically only have four families that show and two are Devon breeders which is fine. I think it's great you have your own breed. We...

    County Fair Judges

Excuse me, but you have no idea of the politics in our county. Yes, it's about having fun but we have two very competitive animals that have won a couple shows already but this judge will give our cattle red ribbons and we will not be able to attend our state fair. Again, like I mentioned, our...

    County Fair Judges

I know this sounds like we are being cry babies but we just found out who are county fair judge is. He is President of the North American South Devon Association and the people that show Devon's in our county show some of his cattle and the rest are direct descendants of this guys cattle. Plus...

    Energy Supplements

At our last show we gave energy alert to our market heifer as she is very hard to make move. It seemed to help but we are trying to shave costs this year and was wondering if anyone has tried mixing an energy drink in the feed. Seems weird but if it works I would be willing to try to save money.

    Great day at show

Somehow only the Simmi photo only got posted so here is the market heifer. We had an awesome time. Great family memories and for the first time I don't think we yelled at each other once. Very relaxing show.

    Joint Supplements?

We also use a product called fluid flex which is really used for horses. We buy from a store called Fleet Farm. It runs about 21 a bottle and I believe will last one steer about 30 days. We also use MSM. We also walk our steer and heifer morning and night quite a distance and may start walking...

    Opinions on market heifer

<beer>Thanks again for the comments we walk morning and evening after rinsing each time. So yes, they get walked a lot and school is finally out in Minnesota so we can start walking really hard. I am really excited but I don't want to get hopes up.

    Opinions on market heifer

Thanks for the comments. Our goal was for a market heifer and no more. I know this sounds horrible to say but our goal is too be at least Reserve market heifer at MN State Fair. We have been after it since last year and we were one animal away from auction and think we have a legit chance this...

    Opinions on market heifer

Opinion on this Monopoly x Friction market heifer. Is she too extreme. I really don't feel pictures do her justice but I sure would love to hear other opinions on her. Sorry the pics were taken with my iphone.
