    Show feed question

They're not eating much because a 32% protein feed probably gives them a tummy ache. Why are you feeding 4 t fyer by itself as a creep feed? Our creep is 14% and we start calves on half creep half precon until they're eating well and then back the precon down to 20-25%

    Breeding Thoughts ...

No idea of his status, but I've seen many excellent Here I Am calves this spring. Also very interested in seeing what Getcha some would do.

    Breeding Thoughts ...

If she were mine, she'd get bred to an Angus. Either Style or Primo.

Is she worth the work? Opinions

Get her bred and get some nice fresh hair on her, and I'd definitely show her. Nothing wrong with that one from your last picture. She's not the best necked or most heavily muscled, but she had the look of one that can get big bellied and looks to have great legs.

    Show cattle health?

We've only fed this specific product for two years, but we've had no issues with those animals being good breeding stock. I've probably fed it to 20 animals, two of them being bulls. Our show animals seem to live as long as our other cows, but they don't always do as well out on only grass or...

    "Short Coupled Steer"

He just looks a bit uncomfortable in all the pictures I've seen so far. A chiropractor may help, but his structure isn't doing him any favors. He's a thick and stylish calf other than that though.

    "Short Coupled Steer"

What's your steer weigh? I'd get him to a chiropractor ASAP, but you may not get dramatic results if he weighs over about 1000 lbs. I'd focus on your back up. Did this calf exhibit this issue when you started feeding him?

    Shorthorn bull

100% agree.  He looks like the old dual purpose types that dad refused to use in the 80's. Could look way way different with a couple hundred pounds on him though.

    sull cyclone 8242 et

Interesting.  I need to get over to Jason's and look at some of them, and I think we may do our Traveler x HD Ruby cow that way this summer.

He probably won't improve rear leg set, but I think he makes them better legged than Swagger for sure and probably also Waco. I liked Evolution as a baby but haven't seen any progeny yet. How are yours?

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

I've been in charge of the daily care for many national champion caliber cattle while at CYT, Torrance, and even my own barn if that counts.....and I've never ever been asked to do something like any of that. There are actually very few PB producers that do seriously sketchy things. Steer and...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

You're not allowed to be good at presenting cattle to be taken seriously. Duh. Just like Ned and Jan Ward, Dale Venhuizen, the Colyers, Silveiras, Hoffman, Cates. These people make their living from their cattle and are also master fitters. They must be awful cattlemen. So sick of the attitude...

I've probably fed as many of these as anyone, so I'll tell you what I think. He's a good bull. Doesn't make them as pretty as his brothers, but will almost always add power and foot size. We had 6 Max Rosa 310 daughters; 4 solutions, one AoD, and one Cyclone. The cyclone the biggest, stoutest...

what breed should I use as my original foundation heifers?

For your location, Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Shorthorn are going to be the most popular show calves. I'd recommend keeping your Angus base and using some Simmental bulls, and maybe a Shorthorn.

Red white & roan or Tomahawk chop

As much as I dislike club calves, the Red White and Roans are looking pretty solid for making PB Shorthorn steers and jackpot type heifers.

I thought maybe they brought them into Canada and then could bring live animals over. It's an incredibly arduous process to bring SA genetics to the US. I looked into the Argentinean cattle myself and would love to try some of them.

How do you grow hair on un-weaned calves?

Does it? What's it saying to you?
  18. shortyjock89

How do you grow hair on un-weaned calves?

We start day weaning sale babies at about 90 days, and fully wean by 120. We bring them in about 7 am, feed and work them like show cattle, feed again about 6pm, and turn them back in with their mothers. I usually don't use Show Coat or any other expensive products on babies until their baby...

Seriously one of the best Shorthorn bulls we've ever used. I can't wait to start showing the calves we have out of him this summer.

    Please evaluate this slick steer.

Where do you all usually show around IL? We don't really do county fairs anymore, but my youngest brother kind of wants to see what they're about. Where do you stall at the state fair? I'd like to come see your belties. I think they're interesting.
