    Genetic Defects

Double muscling is extremely heavily muscled animals that appear to have 2 of every muscle.  In reality, they only have one but it is much larger than normal.  Belgian Blue cattle are known for this trait.  It's caused by a mutation in the myostatin gene which when functioning correctly "turns...

Show cattle operation ideas would like input on this idea

Hey Ryan--Reading all of this really puts a smile on my face.  I love seeing people interested in the cattle business!  Something to think about when you are building your barn, look around at other people's barns and get some ideas.  I've been a lot of places and seen so much stuff that I think...

    excused absences

Make sure you put a positive spin on your essay.  Tell your teacher about all the great things 4-H does to develop youth.  Try to stay away from attacking the school administrators and this rule.  If it was me, I would ask your teacher to help you perfect your essay after the assignment has been...

    Cooler Room Alarms

Thanks everyone!  We were actually planning to do both.  We  have a slide door that we're putting a weight on with an electromagentic latch in case power goes out.  Still trying to figure out if we can hook it up to a thermostat as well.  Might end up just hooking an exhaust type fan to a...

    Cooler Room Alarms

Putting in a cooler room and looking for an alarms system.  I've done some google searching and found quite a few for warehouse, freezer rooms, etc. and I know that Cool Calf sells them as well.  Has anyone had good luck with a certain brand or bad luck?  We are going to be hooking it up to a...

Why continue to breed TH and PHA carriers?

TH affects a gene that is clearly critical in hind limb formation, so yes it is linked to the bone that you see in the carriers.  Pretty sure the geneticists have said this.  This gives reason for steer producers to use them. Otherwise I'd have to venture to say that people are still using...

    Senior Showmanship

Depends on who you ask.  You definitely want to give your animal space.  Some prefer a fully straightened arm, some prefer a slightly bent elbow.  I can't keep my arm that straight for that long especially if I have a dead headed heifer and have to fight to keep her head up so I tend to keep...

    Senior Showmanship

I, for one, absolutely would not say "You're the Judge, so whatever you say is what I would change." If I were judging, that would say to me that you don't know your animal at all.  The point of showmanship is to be able to show your animal to its best, i.e. showing its faults out of it.  This...

    TH and PHA testing

Do you have any calves out of her and free bulls that you can test?  That's the only other idea I have...  Good luck!!

    TH and PHA testing

1st thing I'd do is test the cow.  If she's free, you don't need to worry about having an affected calf.  As far as I know, it'd be pretty hard to tell on an ultrasound (if it is indeed possible) until the calf is fairly developed.
