    County Fair, Hair vs Slick

I guess I will add another comment on this topic after reading what Rocky Hill had to say. When it comes to steers, I really don't care if they have hair or not. Like I said before, a decent judge will be able to see/evaluate through the hair and make his placings accordingly. I will say...

    County Fair, Hair vs Slick

GB, I can understand your thoughts on this (I too have never seen anyone order hair at a steakhouse), however I think it is wrong to punish a kid with hair. To me that shows that he has spent a lot of time with that animal: washing, brushing, and blowing it out. I also believe that if a judge...

    County Fair Pictures!

Tony, The calves all looked really good. Congrats on the success! Do you guys show in Polk County? The barn looks like it but I can't tell for sure. I sorted the beef there 2 years ago now.  Again congrats, the kids look they are doing a great job. Jim

    Showcattle.com

I joined just over over a month ago, trying it right now to see if there is any way I can incorporate into my teaching in the future. I'm not losing money yet, but I'm not making a whole lot yet either..lol BKJB Farms is the handle I use over there.

    Article - "Against-grain" - Featuring J&K genetics

I don't normally respond to topics such as this, however there are quite a few disparities in what is being said. Yes you are correct, Grass-Fed beef is higher in CLA'a and Omega-3's, however it is at a level in which you would have to eat an inordinate amount of beef in order to get the...

I'm wanting to pursue a degree in Animal Science (would like some feedback)

One of the best teachers and professors I have ever had always tells us: "Don't let school stand in the way of your education". I try to remember this especially as a teacher. There is so much a person can learn outside of the classroom and I feel it's my job to try and expose as many people as...

I'm wanting to pursue a degree in Animal Science (would like some feedback)

I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2006 with a degree in Animal Science and can say that I had some very decent offers for very good money. However, most of them required moving around a lot and basically when and where those certain companies required. I guess I could have...

    I'll show you mine

Whoa there oakbar!! I think this post was all in jest! I have never seen ITK personally attack anyone on this forum. I know he said he was calling you out but I believe it was all in fun. I guess only ITK can answer that question for sure, but I'm pretty sure if you don't read to much into his...

Any News from the Charolais Jr National???

Audrey Hambright from Chapman, KS had the Reserve Champion Heifer in the Bred and Owned Show with a Heifer/Calf Pair. I only remember that the calf is a heifer sired by TR Firewater. Audrey judged for me at Colby so it was pretty exciting when I found out how well she had done.

    Do alias calves stay sound

OH Breeder is correct that most of the issues with Alias come up front. Most of them tend to toe out at least a little bit, however I have seen quite a few that were very sound as well. Most of the one's I have seen came from Jerry Adamson in Nebraska. He has used a lot of Alias in the past few...

    Livestock Judging

Jill, I couldn't have said it better myself. Excellent response and she is correct about everything she said. I will also say that it did take me an extra semester of school to graduate, but i had planned it that way when I decided to transferr. I guess I can't stress enough that education...

    college football tickets

Could he sit in the student section if he had the ticket validated? I know that's what we had to do at Nebraska. If a person wanted to sit in the student section they had to have it validated and pay full price for the ticket. So a ticket that would cost the student $20 would end up costing the...

    Livestock Judging

As far as schools go the JUCO programs closest to you would be Joliet Junior College, Lakeland Community College, and Black Hawk - East Community College. Kansas has many strong programs including Butler, Hutchison, Coffeyville, Colby, and Allen County. Wyoming has Casper, Northwest (Powell)...

Johndeereman, First off, glad to hear that you are interested in livestock judging. What began for me as something that I just enjoyed has now became my passion and full time job as livestock judging coach. It can be a truely wonderful and amazing experience if done right. Now back to the...

    Tornado in Manhattan

I just recieved an email from one of my judging kids who is from Chapman. It shows some pretty extensive damage to alot of the town. It looks like all 3 of the schools got hit hard with the High School looking completely demolished. Alot of structural damages to houses as well. I'll give her a...

Give some credit where it is due!!!

Thanks you too: First and foremost is my Father: He has been my inspiration and my rock to lean on. He has not only taught but also show me the value of hard work and dedication. Without him, I wouldn't have the start in the cattle industry that I have today. He also made me realize the...

    Best steakhouses you know!

aj, I'm pretty sure I know the Chris S. you are talking about. He is quite a character. I believe also used to be the asst. Football coach at Idalia as well. Good guy and a good family as well. One of his brother's farms a lot of acre's by us and his other brother is the V.P of a bank in Wray...

    Best steakhouses you know!

A few of my favorites. As a judging coach I get the opportunity to travel all of the country and try many different places out. Most of mine still happen to be small town places though. Big Ed's - Bird City, KS (Small town on HWY 36 between St. Francis and Atwood, KS) Route 36 Grill & Pub -...
