I don't normally respond to topics such as this, however there are quite a few disparities in what is being said.

Yes you are correct, Grass-Fed beef is higher in CLA'a and Omega-3's, however it is at a level in which you would have to eat an inordinate amount of beef in order to get the necessary amounts to be beneficial.

Secondly, you talk about hormone/growth implanted beef affecting maturity rates. There is more Estrogen found in a serving of carrots than in a serving of beef. So are we now going to start saying carrots can cause early maturity in today's youth?

Corn is not bad for ruminants or human's if consumed/fed in proper ammounts. We all need some sugar and starch in our diet to survive.

I respect you all for your opinions and doing what works for you, however make sure your claims are substantiated.

excellent points jimmyski

we also need fat in our diets too, it helps lubricate our joints.

i can't stand it when facts get in the way.

you can tell when someone is going to lie with facts when they say, "you know, the fact of the matter is..."

Here's a quote from Prevent.Disease.com:

"Cattle are ruminants. Their digestive systems are designed for grass, not grain. Fed on corn, they fatten in a hurry—it’s similar to force-feeding a goose to make its liver fat. A corn diet makes cattle sick, sometimes fatally. The animals must have antibiotics to stave off illness and infection until they weigh enough to be slaughtered, as well as hormones to promote quick growth. All this saves money for the growers and keeps the price of beef low."

This has also been stated in Stockman's Grass Farmer...

People can choose to eat beef, not eat beef, eat only grass/grain finished beef, eat only fish...whatever they so desire.  There is no right or wrong answer here.

grass has grains, they are called seeds.  that's how they reproduce.  so the argument is about time.

Fed on corn, they fatten in a hurry—it’s similar to force-feeding a goose to make its liver fat.  this is such a leap of "faith", it's ridiculous, almost janesian.  force feeding.  is mcdonalds force feeding humans?

A corn diet makes cattle sick, sometimes fatally.  how MANY versus overall population on corn, which it isn't totally corn anyway.

The animals must have antibiotics to stave off illness and infection until they weigh enough to be slaughtered, as well as hormones to promote quick growth.  i have a problem with the word MUST.  again, this simply isn't true no matter how many times you say it.

All this saves money for the growers and keeps the price of beef low."  this simply is so funny it's ridiculous.  isn't grass fed beef the same thing, keeping the "price" low and saving money?

This has also been stated in Stockman's Grass Farmer...  stating something over and over doesn't make it fact.

People can choose to eat beef, not eat beef, eat only grass/grain finished beef, eat only fish...whatever they so desire.  There is no right or wrong answer here.  this is true and need not be confused by claims.

stockman grass farmer wants to sell their product, nothing wrong with that, but when it is so biased as to the above quotes, they are starting to lose a little credibility with me.

it would be useful to know how many.  though for some, 1 is too many.  why don't we get rid of cars?

Now Knabe, I never said a thing about banning antibiotics or growth hormones, did I?  I simply stated it meat with that stuff probably wasn't as good for you as meat without it.  Anything artificial that goes into your body isn't as healthy for you as something natural... period.  I know several, not a big group.  However, one family, with no history of autism whatsoever, has 3 kids (all cousins, not siblings) who have it.  Why did it just now show it's face in this generation, when no other generations in that family have ever had anything like that?  Maybe it's genetic, but that doesn't explain away other familys who have their 1st autistic child.  25 years ago, we had none of that stuff around here.  Not saying it's beef either, but it's obviously something.

what about the effects of soybean on testosterone?

Almost all soybeans today are genetically altered... you know "roundup ready", etc.  I can't say, but maybe soybeans have become altered mutants & that is why it effects testosterone the way it does.  Those studies weren't done until a few years ago & we've had GMO Beans since before those studies.

again, this is because they are being reported more than the period in which they are being compared to.  typical mumbo jumbo.

I beg to differ!  Our cancer rates are on the rise around here in just the last 25 years.  You can't tell me that they didn't know what cancer was or couldn't diagnose it 25 years ago.
Also, my mom is a school teacher as are others that I know.  They will all tell you that even young kids do not act the way they did 20 years ago.
Autism was pretty much never heard of around here, but in just the last 10 years, I know several kids who have it.
It ain't mumbo jumbo Knabe, I see this stuff increasing with my own eyes & our counties population has actually decreased by a few thousand over the last 20-25 years.

being taught to be a complainer is probably #1 in my book.  people put up with a lot more in years gone by.  marketing is simply cashing in on new markets.

I wont disagree that people complain more... just read this thread for clarification.  But, pre-school kids being way too hyper isn't complaining.  People dying with cancer isn't complaining.  I've also never heard an autistic kid complain... not one!

this can be accomplished by using marinades and if you cook one with marinades and the grass fed normal, what then is the comarison?????

You may be able to ADD more Omega 3's... I wont deny that.  And you maybe could add more CLA... but, I don't know about that.  HOWEVER, a marinade will not reduce the Omega 6's & it's the high Omega 6's that are the problem.  And that marinade will also add even more calories to a piece of meat that is already higher in calories.  Yes, grass fed meat is slightly lower in calories.

again, not true!!!!!

We have chicken houses & facilities in neighboring counties... I know exactly what I am talking about.  Those birds will die of a heart attack if they are not harvested at an extremely early age.  How can a bird that is about ready to ckick the bucket, be good for you?  Since Tyson moved in & I've seen it first hand, I've stopped eating as much chicken.

And a lot of American's are becoming convinced too, whether you like it or not.  that's because the humans have a need for faith, religion is disappearing, but it is reappearing in marketing scams and victimization.

I agree 100%.  God created man with a natural instinct to worship his creator.  If a man wont worship God, he will begin to find something else to worship... we have idols all around us.  Maybe not carvings of sticks & stones, but they do worship other things.  So, yes, I do think that scams & victimization is spot on.  But, before you go applying that logic to grass fed beef, think about how long beef has been fed grain, or should I say say how long it hasn't been grain fed & then let's talk about scams & victimization.  The truth is, the current US Beef industry will not survive with high fuel & high corn... it can't & it just ain't gonna happen.  If either of those goes higher, you will see exactly what I am talking about.

(god couldn't do a big bang?  seems to me that's what the bible is describing),

When I read the Bible, I read nothing about a big bang.  It simply says... "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.  And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day." That may sound like a big bang to you, but it sure doesn't to me.

But, yes, God could do anything he wants.  But, not only does it not sound like a big bang, why would He cause a big bang, when all He has to do is speak?

if the earth wasn't created till i can't remember which day, "our" time is measured by us going around the sun.  the universe could have rotated for a while, which would be billions before the micro measurement around the sun

And there is the words "could have".  But, the Bible clearly tells how long each person lived & when you add all that up, you get about 6,000 years.  And yes, the Bible does mention dinosaurs after the great flood, in the book of Job.  The climate change after the great flood not only caused man not to live several hundred years, it also caused the dinosaurs to begin to go extint too.

Now, you will probably say that I can't prove that & you would be correct.  But, I am not worried about proving it & neither is the Bible worried about proving it.  The Bible never tries to argue with an unbeliever, it just simply states "In the beginning, God made...", & states it as a fact.  You either believe that or you don't.  But, I've yet to meet a person who could prove the big bang theory, which is just that, a "theory" & even scientists call it a "theory".  But, the idea of nothing creating nothing is rediculous!!  You'd have a better chance of a tornado ripping through a junk yard & it building a fully operational 747 jet plane, than you would a big bang actually happening from NOTHING.

ask kit pharo what the oldest cow looked like he sent to the packer that went to the packer rather than someone else.

I could care less what Kit Pharo took to a packer, but obviously you don't think that it was an animal that would impress the general public.  And if Kit did take something really undesirable & the packer accepted it, then you just admitted that other people are indeed taking junk cows to the packer & it's going into the food chain, not just those shown on a video.  And "Simtal" wonders why the industry has a black eye & wants me to educate the public about the truth.  Do you want me to ask Kit to send me a photo of that cow, so I can educate them?  Seriously, whether it is right or wrong, isn't the point.  The point is, the public doesn't think it's right & the industry is blacking their own eyes in the publics mind!  Educating them, will not change that.

all segments have their dirty little secrets.  it's like "grassfed" beef animals breed by some magic and never reach middle age.  this is a marketing weakness that at some point will bite back.

If you are talking about grass finishers selling "downer" cows, which I think you might be... I think you are seriously reaching.  Yeah, people do sell older cows, but selling an older cow that is otherwise healthy & selling a immobilized cows are 2 totally different things.  And if the grass finishers sell it to a traditional packer who is not marketing it as all natural grass fed beef, how will that ever bite back.  If anything, that only help, because it will convice the grass fed consumers that they are getting exactly what they think that they are getting & someone else is is getting the stuff that is not up to par.

this just isn't supported by any evidence anywhere.

Just look at all the artifical sweatners & the fact that people mostly gain weight & how people eat more  calories when they consume them... nutrasweet has caused several problems & Saccarine (spelling?) is a know cancer causer... it may not be all be supported, but that doesn't mean it isn't bad.

_____________
Just to be clear, i am not against grass fed beef, or even trying to make it the same product as regular beef with different inputs, as i'm doing something similar with a mixed grass/grain to finish

And I want to be clear that I'm not against grain fed beef either, nor do I think it should be banned, just think that all natural grass fed beef is healthier, that is all.

At least we have one thing in common... Ildeno was a really good bull!  ;)

The paleo-indian survived on grass fed mammouth and look at how well he did.  ;D I still like grain fattened beef though. I think we should ban cell phones cause they cause auto accidents. At least leave us drunks alone. ;D

I agree to disagree on this whole issue  (argue)

I think that might be best for all of us to do.  Obviously, we all have our own opinions & we aren't likely to change each others minds.  Still it's fun to debate & hear what others have to say.  It keeps you thinking & learning too, but I've got too much other more important stuff going on tonight.  Peace.
