    Asking Too Much??!!

They are all about frame 6's... They certainly don't need to be bigger...but we won't need them to be downsized too much either!

Oakbar heifers at Sioux Falls---didn't place well but we like 'em anyway

NICE heifers, oakbar...! I always found if a heifer got lost in the middle of the class as a calf, her calves usually ended up at the top!!! You know how it goes!!!

    Asking Too Much??!!

I am starting to look around for clubby bulls to use for breeding this spring and am hoping some of you Steerplaneteers can help me out! Does anyone have a suggestion for pretty easy calving (consistently, I'm scared of Monsters!!!) black clubby bull that will add some bone, hair and thickness...

    Maternal Hereford Bulls

We've had great success for maternal genetics with MSU STAR Headliner, and FCC Absolute. Both bulls have given us excellent daughters - low birth weights, extremely sound, moderate frame scores, and with excellent udders, feet and legs.

    Gigolo Joe vs Tyson

Romax, We used Gigolo Joe on Hereford x Shorthorn cows this year and our birthweights were between 85 - 95 lbs (Of course, our Canadian winters tend to add 10 pounds to an American birthweight), as does using him on cows. I wouldn't hesitate to use Joe on heifers, as they were moderate enough...

    How About THIS?!

I'm wondering if the misunderstanding wasn't perhaps, a bit of a misquote?? The story also states that the steer was being shown with a nose-ring, which I highly doubt was the case....hmmmm.... ::)

    Bull Promotion- Controlled or UNcontrolled?

I'm not knocking...knocking the showing. However, it seems a little bit absurd to paint everyone with the same brush. I go out and report the exact date my show calf was born (because I can compete without lying). If I have a bull calf with a 122 # BW, I steer him because I don't want anyone to...

    O9 Calves

We are just getting started for 2009, with 20 calves on the ground out of about 100 head. In addition to our herd sires Canasta (Sonny son), Maverick (Mr. Gus 30B son),  and Grandmaster (Quartermaster son) - all Shorthorns, and our Headliner 10H son (Hereford), we used DR World Class...

    Denver Display Cattle

I am trying to get my plane ticket booked for the NWSS. Can anyone tell me when the club bulls are supposed to be on display this year? Maybe I am reading things wrong, but I can't seem to find the dates!! Thanks for the help!

Prospect Steers & Heifer Selling at the Canadian Agribition

Thanks everyone for the great comments! It is always nice to hear such a positive response. All three calves are the same breeding. They are sired by Daines Thriller 111F (Purebred Black Maine) and out of Hereford/Shorthorn cows sired by KMS Maverick 30B 17L (the heifers dam) and KMS...

    What's Wrong With This

As an interesting aside, traits that are exhibited by a carcass winning steer can also NOT be acceptable in the commercial world. ei, ski feet that would cause a sister of that steer (who was slaughtered at 14 months) to not be able to walk through the pastures until she was 12 years old...

    Everyone likes baby pics

I, too, think the Shorthorn EPD's have gotten a little strange...and useless. I know bulls with a 0.6 EPD that others have reported 140 pound calves off of. Shouldn't a bull with a 0.6 EPD NEVER  have an 140 lb. calf? Our best cows, who normally wean 800 lb plus calves, have dropped to having...

    recip candidates

We breed and sell cows specifically to be recips. They are Hereford Shorthorn crosses that we normally sell or start putting eggs in at age three, which seems to be a great age for this. We like the Hereford Shorthorn cross because they have the milking ability from the Shorthorns in a tidy...

    Horns??

I'm with Stumpy on this one! We usually surgically dehorn the ones we are going to show at about 5 months of age, so the sooner you can get him to a good vet, the better. If the vet knocks him right out, he won't remember a thing and won't be head-shy later. The vet can also file the sides of...

    Kentucky Derby

It was actually Proud Spell that ran in the Kentucky Oaks, same trainers different horse. Eight Belles wasn't raced in the Oaks at all - that WOULD be silly!
