    salute

I am experiencing reoccurring Deja Vu (especially with shorthorn related threads).  What medication if any is recommended?  Right when I think I'm over it, it re occurs!   This repetitive cycle is not constructive and serves no positive purpose. RELAX, RELAX, RELAX, RELAX

    Mad Cow in cali.

The grain market isn't the same as it was in 03 - 04 (not even close).  The fall of 06 things changed in the grain market, that's when volatility and speculation really seemed to takeover.  Corn prices were low $2 range summer of 06 and prices haven't been below $4 since that fall here...

    Mad Cow in cali.

I agree, it's always a had a negative effect in the past, even though I'm pretty sure all cases in this country have been dairy?  Dairy industry produces milk but at the end of the day most animals do eventually become hamburger and get mixed with beef cattle.  Japan is a big customer that I...

Why doesn't the Shorthorn breed have a epd for stayability.

Why not just make it as simple as possible.  Like say keep track of all registered daughters out of individual sires, sires with a high percentage of daughters raising calves past 7 years old and raising calves every year, would have a high stayabilty.  Ones that are having 1, 2, or 3 calves and...

Great illustration to debunk "pink slime" fiasco

It doesn't seem to matter what it is or isn't, it's what it's labled as.  Pink Slime -  it just sounds disgusting and then they say sprayed with ammonia, etc. immediate turnoff from the public who don't understand, which immediately turns to super store chain after super store chain taking the...

    Success of the Shorthorn breed

The main reason we tried and and will continue to use shorthorns is the docility[/b (our blacks needed some assistance in this area)]!  The first sale I went to was in central IL. and I got hooked on how the calves looked and how they [b]acted! (clapping)

    Failure of the Shorthorn breed???

In very general terms you would be correct!  I have a ?, let's say you have 10 bred angus heifers all look nearly identical, but all were unrelated.  So all must be the same in marbling, docility, milking ability, b.w., growth,  etc.?  Since they look the same they must be the same is that not...

    New pasture seeding, variety suggestions?

    New pasture seeding, variety suggestions?

Most of the no-till NRCS drills around here are JD, and if your seeding in the spring, you might as well put the clover seed on top of the ground  (down pressure is adjustable and well need to be adjusted with different soil conditions.  Just pull the drop tubes off and let the seed go on the...

    Cutting Bull Calves

I don't know what's best for the showring but our commercial calves we cut at birth (never had any problems with a couple hundred a year).  Our neighbor cuts his at 5 or 6 months and every once in a while, one will bleed to death (it's not very often but it has happened to them anyhow). ...

    Failure of the Shorthorn breed???

I will argue that there are certain shorthorn, red angus, black angus, Charolais, etc. that are very similar in type and looks.  If one was to paint them all black, one couldn't tell which breed was which and yet all bring different strong points and negative ones to a mating (so there would...

    Creep Feed

We used to grind corn and square bales of alfalfa together (works good).  We now get a pelleted feed from ADM that makes them grow and not get so fleshy so early - it also helps in the weaning process as far as keeping them from getting sick.

    Video that PETA would love.

So that's where sausage comes from?  I have a feeling that most of the country would turn vegetarian if they knew these cute little baby animals were going to be meat someday, they may not be vegetarians for long but probably for a little while?  All though they aren't near as cute when they get...

birth weights (+/- 2.5 lbs per day)

Normal calves are never early or late they are always on time (given their genetics and environment-feed)!   So birthweight is weight at birth (period). JIT - there is as many or more different types of commercial cattle people than seedstock (one size does not fit all as you already said).  I...
