    PETA is at it again!!

The information I stated here was incorrect (my bad), these big companies are not steering away from farrowing crates they are steering away from gestational crates.  Basically they stay in a crate while they pig and until they are confirmed rebred, then get turned into a group pen.  The place I...

    PETA is at it again!!

Chandler, really people like me??? I'm sure the oil companies aren't concerned with higher consumer prices either. If you would like you can PM me your obvious negative experience with farrowing crates and maybe I'll understand your viewpoint?  In my experience which was a brief period, 15 -...

    PETA is at it again!!

I guess you missed the part where I said that the mortality rate is quite a bit higher for these open pens, which leads to higher prices for the consumer.  These big companies are not changing because the open pen is better or more econimical, they are doing it because a picture has been...

    PETA is at it again!!

Chandler - many large companies are steering away from farrowing pens (mainly because of these groups).  What I remember about farrowing outside or open pens was sows exposed to the elements, and a high death rate with the pigs (mainly from getting stepped on or laid on by mamma).  This is just...

careful pricing your low end show steers

I was thinking the same thing when ground was selling for 4 and 5 thousand.  :(   Ground sales today are for the people that have the money and don't have to borrow or at least very much.  Most of the loans years ago was for 20 -40 year loans and now the people that still have to do this just...

    HARB PENDLETON 765 J H

His EPD's suggest he is safe on heifers and has real data to back it up (acc. 91%).  I've never used him or seen any progeny but would not hesitate to use him on heifers if so desired!  Good Luck

    A&T CAPTAIN OBVIOUS calves

She does live in Ohio and she is a spring calver,  Captain is running with a group of falls right now.  Jamie -  does this mean you would be interested in progeny of a mating of Lakeside Clementine 705T to Captain Obvious?

    Angus bulls on heifers

Here's a scenario for you, Sire has 10 for CED high accuracy Dam has 2 for CED Calf with no registered offspring has CED of 2 (now how do they come up with that?) I've also seen bulls with no offspring have a little lower #'s than both their sire and dam. I'm sure their is a system but haven't...

    Angus bulls on heifers

The thing about Northern Improvement is he is out of TC Stockman 365 and he has a 4.5 for birthweight epd. :( , which is pretty big for angus.  The cow he is out of has a smaller b.w. epd but is only a +5 for CED (sometimes I wonder how they come up with some of the #'s they do).

    Long or are they wide?

Chutes don't work either if they have any span at all.  We got a neighbor that has around 20 hd. just because he likes the way they look.  ;D

    Long or are they wide?

Wouldn't mind having this set on my wall! He's probably calving ease too! ;) Dang Australians won't even let us raise our own longhorns anymore. ;D http://animaltracks.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/15/10415574-take-this-bull-by-the-horns-all-109-inches-of-them

    Loving Farms Sale

Kinda buried! ;D They must of thought quite a bit of the calf and momma to put him in their sale.  Deffinitely a different type of performance it would be interesting to see if the cow can hold up and calve every year for the next several years. No mistake RankerCattleCo  look it up shorthorn.org

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

almost has to be a mistake...what's the link to the catalog, or a reg #? No Mistake.  Well at least not on the statement of calving at 14 months! Reg. x4176964 http://lovingfarms.com/ForSale.html It doesn't happen often is a little bit of a understatement! ;)

How can I build a "squeeze" in my cattle allyway?

We got a couple corrals made out of guard rail and we have the same problem.  When we work calves we roll in a couple old semi tires and fasten a portable gate up to one side of the alley with the truck tires in the middle, and then fasten a second portable gate on to the one with the tires to...

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

    1.  You are right not many, as in basically none are harvested at a year of age.  Too much money left on the table at this point. 2.  Your statement about more pounds = more dollars and that the grid has never made up for 25 - 30 extra carcass lbs. would be correct, you just need to get closer...

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

How many cattle actually get slaughtered at a year of age? Are high performance cattle high performance if momma doesn't calve every year or doesn't make it to 7, 8, 9, 12 years old and calve every year?  It's not as simple as more lbs. = more dollars. (anybody hear of quality and premiums), if...

Can we design cows that are too low to the ground?

I don't think this is an issue yet- could it be someday (lots of things are possible - I wouldn't want a holstein calf trying to nurse a Lowline cow). :)  The calf just has to figure out where it's at, how many times have you all seen a calf get up  and try nursing the front of the cow (that's...
