    Multimin 90?

Even at $5 per head another 10% or so on conception in a largely AI operation would make a big difference, on in a small one if it made the difference on just 1 cow.

Semen dropped in a tank question

We used a metal grabber, and it should not freeze or affect it in any way

Semen dropped in a tank question

cpubarn is right, and don't be afraid to bed the cane in 2 if you have to in order to get it out, and if you come up empty we pour all the N2 into a styrofoam cooler and fish the straws out of the cooler full of nitrogen.  We are usually able to salvage all but about a cup of the nitrogen

    choosing a bull..... numbers...?

The BW is birthweight, you want as small of a number as possible.  The WW is weaning weight, here, bigger is better.  The YW is yearling weight and here too you want a larger number.  For a heifer I would recommend focusing on a small BW since a live calf is the best calf.  I'm not a shorthorn...

    cuts of meat

The moment that the people who are already in our industry begin to be snide and uninviting to kids is the moment that this industry (agriculture) withers away and the world starves.  we have to raise our own up into farming/ranching/showing and comments like the above are the reason kids don't...

    cuts of meat

skirt steak comes from the plate or belly of the cow.  It is used more for its flavor than it's tenderness. Please excuse the rude comments of some on this board. BS---this is obviously a student, which 90% of the time means CHILD who is using a resource she thought she could trust.  Please...

    Crossbreeding

according to him at that point you just get too mongrel and receive diminishing returns.  Our herd at the university definitely seems to support his hypothesis

    Crossbreeding

My Beef Repro professor always said that hybrid vigor is at its peak on the second cross, ie simagus F1 x charolais bull gives you your best calf possible.  His formula was AB+C=Zsquared, meaning that the progeny from the second cross will be the best you'll ever get.

    Negative experiences with Zilmax

That's correct Moezmom.  It diverts nutrients that would go to make fat into protein (muscle).  If you start it before a calf is finished he will never finish or marble well

Flighty steer. Would like some input

rinse him EVERY day, push him to the limits of his tolerance at home, EVERY DAY and pray for them every day.  Washing has always calmed our flighty ones down almost unbelievably, and maybe get them to take him to a couple shows and tie him as close to the action as they can and just make him...

    heifer help

so she doesn't like you messing with her legs/feet?  that's a whole separate issue and you need to work with her on it, but don't push her too hard.  Don't make her upset enough to get away from you and hurt you or herself

    heifer help

I had a calf that was extremely ticklish one time that would move away and twitch his hide if you even looked at him hard...Just work her gently (just in case she is sensitive) and she should get better

I haven't used a chute in 3 years, spent lots of money on good chutes that I still have but we work with our cattle a lot more now and just don't need them.  The only thing that usually bothers calves at first is the blower and the clippers, which after just a few times they will come to...

    best and worst buys

Best buy: JD 4440 and 4640 tractors...18000 and 14000 hours respectively and no repairs at all besides maintenance (changing filters/fluids) and a few hydraulic lines etc...never had to send either to a shop.  Also have a Priefert Squeeze that we know has had an average of 900 cattle worked...

    Daggum goat!

our cowdogs sleep with the calves most nights, and the oldest usually barks at the window when a cow is calving, great alarm system.  Pretty much the dogs and cattle know how to separate work and play at this point.  And I really like the pygmy goat idea, I might have to try that if we have any...

    Carpe Diem Is dead

there is a purebred herf bull "World Class" that is very much that powerful, we got some outstanding calves off of sim/maine heifers from him, they rivaled my heatwaves in thickness and were soggier

    RESEARCH PROJECT/Cattlemen/women need your HELP

Even in a well above average herd less than 1% of the females will deserve to be donor cows, that said some herds have more, most have less or none.  We have 400 cows and while most rank in the top 25% for at least most epd's we only flush 2 or 3 a year, and rarely flush one more than twice in...
