    injection site reaction

I have a yearling butt that has just gotten rid of a golfball sized know from a tet. injection we gave in March.  Some just don't handle drugs well.

    Pick on this heifer!

nice calf with a good pedigree.  My granddaddy still loves saugahatchees and has made me AI a few Chars to him and the heifers have made great cows.

    putting bloom on club calves

We use peanut skins from before they press them for oil, 19% fat and 14% protein, about $100/ton and high fiber as well.  we have started using them in all our feeds this year because of the cost for nutrients.

    Favorite Breeds?

I'll throw another continental breed out there to compete with the simmis, Charolais.  They are massive growing, low input (I weaned first calves out of heifers, no creep, averaged 750# at 200 days) and just as good a milker as anything else.  I would also like to add that smoky black hided...

    Needed: camera recommendations

Well folks, the old camera has bitten the dust.  I need something that will take good cattle pictures, landscapes across fields, as well as indoor shots.  I would like to keep it below $300 but I also want the best camera for the money.  If you have any suggestions for cameras that you either...

here's a county fair pic you don't see everyday.

My girlfriend and I always rode ours into the sale ring, she always seemed to get a little more for her calves though, guess it was the smile  ;)

    Covering Aluminum Chute Side rails

The bed liner won't be rough enough to pull hair out if they rub against it?  I have not idea but the though occurred to me so I thought I'd ask

    club calf herd

If by commercial you mean salebarn calves I would recommend a low birthweight Charolais (below.5 should be no troubles at all on any mature cow and most well managed heifers).  The calves will grow like weeds and any smokes or yellows you get will be a premium at the barn even up to and above blacks

    How soon is too soon?

45 days post calving is our rule of thumb, it all depends on how well she cleaned up and her bcs

    Aubrac cattle

Good looking cattle and impressive data.  Have you ever crossed them with Charolais?

    feed grinder q

I was just wondering what brand feed grinder y'all would recommend.  Our Gehl has about bitten the dust and they claim they don't make them anymore and used ones are sky high so I was wondering from anyone who has bought a new feed grinder lately what brand(s) you like or dislike.

    fall vs spring

It depends on where you're at and when your best market is.  For us fall is the only option as calves will not grow nearly as well in the summer heat as they will on winter grazing and our best market is spring and early summer.  As big M stated, your situation is probably much more dependent on...

Is a grain fed bull worth it out on pasture?

According to several university studies, it takes about 2 days for rumen bugs to change from feed to grass digestion.  After that a bulkl has no excuse to have troubles.  We develop bulls with no feed except during the winter with hay and ours make the same yearling weights as bulls from the big...

    An interesting statement about Simmentals

I thought it was dated but I figured I would ask.  It's always nice when people come to the defense of their respective breed in my opinion.

    Needed: pictures for livestock judging

I was introduced to livestockjudging.com last night actually and really liked the few classes I looked at.  We just use 101 for starting middle school kids and when other plans fall through.  I have several breeders who have already happily agreed to put classes together for the kids and I'll...

    An interesting statement about Simmentals

I was flipping through a friend's books from her animal science classes at Auburn University and one said that Simmental cattle need to be managed more like dairy cattle as they are higher volume milkers and typically hard keeping.  We have never messed with them much but the ones I have seen...
