What ever happened to honest judges

Might want to look into that a bit more SouthWest.... if I recall correctly, when my Aunt was in the Ms. America pagent, the panal included a tv producers, a former winner, and a model agency.... not exactly IQ type judges! You do make a good point about judges picking the combination animal...

ASA Member question. New donor dam requirements for ET calf registration

I was under the impression you just had to DNA the calves if the cow and bull wasn't on record for TH/PHA.  On the other hand, if the cow wasn't DNA'd for type when she was flushed, the seller flat screwed you.  Go talk to them. Don't hold the assoc accountable for YOUR lack of knowledge and the...

What ever happened to honest judges

Has donald trump ever looked for a ms. USA contestant in a factory or the streets of Souix City? I hate to think I am defending the "show industry" but lets face it, the "real world cattle" and "show cattle" are two different worlds. Admit it and move on.

What ever happened to honest judges

I have long said  : A steer/heifer show is just that, a SHOW. That is why it is called a steer show, heifer show. It is a beauty contest. The best hair wins. The best cosmetic job wins. OR else why is sullivans giving out 20 grand in scholarships?  They can do that because it is a SHOW, and we...

What do you charge or pay for fitting?

Lots of people apparently for hire on here, so I will give a different perspective. I have worked/hired lots of "professionals" who sounded great. "I will be the first one there, last one in bed, and will always be doing something to improve your cattle..." and most of the time, they were crap...

    calving

DEF - I would STRONGLY encourage you to have your vet take samples to send into a lab. Have them test for the "usuals" as well as a few not so common things your vet might be aware of in your area. I have had mixed results with finding out what actually caused a calf to die, or an abortion...

    First time dealing with warts

Haven't heard about them for years in our area, but what you describe sounds like warbles. They can make a large bump under the hide, near the spine. They incubate and then "hatch", which they dig their way out, and leave an open hole. Check into the time line to kill them, as killing them at...

At $160,000 it would be a close call  if they made any profit!    <beer>

    Pasture Problems

You people have no imagination.... keep an eye out and when you see them tresspassing again. Shoot in their general direction (don't actually shoot them!) Besides some dirty pants, I am willing to bet they won't be back. Plus, what are they going to do, call the law and tell them they were doing...

my state fair started on a bad note

Any animal (unless it is an Iowa Deer that is hit by a car) is twice as valuable dead, as it ever would be alive... just think of the potential that heifer had... just think of the possibilities of the unborn calf. Yep, most valuable cow in California. I guess it goes without saying that "Happy...

    Angus Question

No Glenstory, the "official list" is not out,  so according to the aaa, barbara is nothing more than an angus cow! And even if SHE is, doesn't mean HE is.... gotta have that test. Those that are "in the know" say today is the day... maybe a bit of "slipped information" but we will see!

    1. Live on a gravel road that is low maintainence, and will be getting LOWER... so need 4 wheel drive capabilities. 2. They sit up higher than cars. They can go through higher snow (see above). 3. I would rather PULL something out of the trunk, than LIFT it out. (Car is for my Mom.... she is...

    horse wormer "police"?

Last winter I needed some ether to start a tractor and went to pick up a can at a local implement store.... the counter guy said "we don't have any I guess" (after he had went to the back to look). I laughed and said "It is January and you have no ether?"  He said "no, a couple of young people...

    Post-legged steer

First off, asprin will cause ulcers if used long term. Second, "Too straight and doing worse every day" seems to be a genetic problem called Spastic phresis (sorry, I can't spell it right). It is a genetic disorder that several bloodlines of cattle have. Not going to get better, only worse...

    Tail swinging problem.

Thanks KCK for picking up on the point I was trying to make... you can permentantly KILL the tail and TISSUE and end up with one hell of a mess (oop, I meant H%$#).  The steer is swishing its tail because it is irritated, remove the irritation, then the tail stops.
