I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

Nate you exactly right...it was a curveball.  They were a breed that you wouldn't expect to receive CAB.

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

I said that I would reveal the breed once it was correctly guessed, but let's keep this going a little longer.  I'll reveal it at some point tomorrow. Here is another hint...we received the Certified Angus Beef premium for 2 of the 32.

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

The average carcass weight was 709 pounds and the average live weight was 1125.  They obviously could have been fed longer but we chose to market them in mid-May to take a good price while we could get it.  And...for the fact that average daily gain and feed efficiency tend to decline as weights...

Frame scores - how small is too small?

It seems like there is a post regarding ideal frame score every couple months.  I think I have linked to this research in prior posts, but here it is again.  If you have the time it is worth the read - http://www.bifconference.com/bif2010/documents/08_johnson_radakovich.pdf Here is excerpt...

NAILE Open Shorthorn Show - a couple interesting facts.

Sue...you didn't miss the point as I didn't intend to direct comments in any specific direction but just wanted to see where people took the discussion.  With that being said...I expected/hoped to see comments such as Trevor Greys' number 2) thoughts and questions which are interesting to...

Video screen sales (Cattle don't come through the sale ring)

I think it only eliminates impulse bidding on the low-end cattle in the sale.  The top end cattle are looked at very closely...so bidders are very comfortable to "pull the trigger".  The lower quality animals don't get as many looks before the sale and thus bidders are probably more reluctant...

    Shorthorn Heifer

Size is sometimes difficult to determine from pictures or video, but she certainly was a standout in terms of quality and power/mass within her contemporary group.

    Best Shorthorn Bull for Heifers

I agree with the unknown breeder - Osage is a good choice for heifers.  They typically arrive unassissted and will grow quickly as well. Here is a picture of a 4-year old cow in our herd.

    Any Sneed sale results

justintime - you submitted your post as I was developing mine.  It seems like we are on the same page.  That is exactly why I post the article regarding cow size and efficiency - a "good" animal varies according to the situation.

    Any Sneed sale results

Much of this thread seems to be a quarrel about who is producing the “right-kind” of Shorthorn cattle.  In one corner it is those who believe that they are most profitable by having a herd of 5-frame cows and in the other corner those that don’t.  In my opinion, both may be right.  The ideal cow...

Livestock Show in Heaven One day in heaven, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint John were standing around the barn, near the livestock pens watching the lambs, goats, steers and hogs wander aimlessly through the lush pastures of heaven. "I am certainly bored," stated John. "Me too," Paul...
