What are the judges looking for this year? Trends?

Hi all.  Last summer there was a thread on here regarding the steer show at the Iowa state fair and the reasons the judge gave for the calves he picked.  I don't remember exactly what the comments were but they included how the calf would grade and cutability and the possibility of moving away...

I need advice on breaking a heifer to lead

We have had luck with this method also.  It does work better with two people and you can move her around a pen going from one point to another using your fence posts or whatever a a dally post.  Breaking calves to lead involves trust building.  People laugh at that but it is true.  If you are...

    Fitting Mats/Groom Chute Mats

Hey, I have done that! Actully have one sitting in the barn now and thinking of cutting it up to put under rubber mats on the grooming chute for extra cushion for the calves.  That dang thing is tough and I think it will work well.

    Cool Collar

I don't sew and have no desire to learn at this point in my life so we purchased one from Sullivans last year.  Used it daily through out the summer.  Left it in the freezer overnight, put in on the calves when we pulled them out of the cool barn and wet them down.  I think it kept the callf...

    What do you feed?

Are you sure it is the roughage intake?  Calves get all kinds of digestive upsets just like you and I do.  The Corrid suggestion is good, but he may just be off balance in the good bugs in his gut.  You can put him on some pro-bios or a product called P-1.

Best Fitting Tips for a Blow & Go Show?

I have seen many grooming tips for all types of shows, but not many for a blow and go.  Our state fair prohibits the use of adhesives and aerosols so I am looking for the best show day tips if anyone would care to share.  Thanks.

    insurance for steer project?

Farm Bureau does insure your 4-H animals but their rates have gotten crazy over the last few years.  I have been told that it is because they lump our livestock into the same group with race horses which seem to have a lot of "accidents".  This may not be the case in your area.  I have found the...

    Cellarator Any Ideas???

Ok, this is a question that I have had for some time now.  Were do we draw the line at supplements?  If you are feeding a good feed, have your minerals, maybe something to promote hair, isn't that enough?  When do you go over the line.  All of these products sound great - but how much do they...

    Revive

When I travel, I try to hit Walgreens or Walmart or any other store where you might find an ethnic hair section.  I happen to live in an area where we don't carry a lot of this type of stuff.  But, you can try many of the sprays such as the pink oil and the motions, but I really like the olive...
