Ban on homemade lunches at school!! N/C

I don't think this is the way to go. The issue of affordability to some families comes to mind, as well as defeating the purpose by going hungry for others. To get healthier children don't target mandatory lunches but rather change vending machines to healthier options. Also, kinda touching on...

best i've seen in a LONG time

An off-topic question that I got out of this thread--is it common for people showing young calves (as in the pictures) to be on their knees in the showring? First I have ever seen this, seems practical with such a small calf but not what I would consider the best showman etiquette. I've shown...

Miserable Winter , High Birth Weights

To go along with the increased blood flow-- cows eat more when its colder out; they have to! More feed means more nutrients which can go towards calf.

    nasal vaccines

Never used them but they're pretty common for horses. The tube is usually very long and goes up the nasal cavity fairly deep. If they react anything like horses after administering it, heads up!

    hockey teams

I'm thinking either Boston or Philly in the east and likely Vancouver or Detroit outta the west. As said though, the west is anyone's guess right now who even makes the playoffs.

    End of the world?

The way I see it is that if all of these predictions are true and as the scientists predict Dec.21, 2012 is the start of the end, then there's really nothing I can do about it anyways but live life to the fullest in the meantime.

    Biggest Issue Facing Animal Agriculture

I recently had a similar assignment come up in a seminar and posted on SP for opinions. Take a browse through these. http://www.steerplanet.com/bb/index.php?topic=26362.0

    Super Bowl-and the haftime deal

Don't mind the BEP, but that halftime show was awful. I switched the station in disgust when fergie tried to sing Sweet Child of Mine...brutal. At least the game was exciting.

    Had to share this...

A freezer full of meat sounds ok with me. Sounds like a good time to have a BBQ if I were in her shoes.

    Climate change or not?

I don't disagree with any points anyone has made here. My only point to add is that there is a difference between climate change and global warming. The reasoning and theory behind global warming is flawed and I do not agree with it at all. I do however believe that our climate is changing...

    Climate change or not?

Here in Manitoba, over the last week and a bit, we have seen temperatures at -38 C, and two days later up to -2 C. The start of this week the windchill made temperatures feel colder than -40C and last night we had rain, with the temperature being +2 C right now. Within two weeks we've have two...

    Coyote excitement!

This story just reminded me of something I saw on the internet last fall. Take a look! http://funnypagenet.com/bear-vs-cows/

PETA They are one class act

I find this absolutely hilarious haha. What will these people think of next? I don't know if most of SP is aware but most of PETA's income goes towards promotions and lobbying, rather than finding homes for stray pets (which they euthanize almost all of) or trying to find alternative production...

Who thinks this is the same calf????? I am not impressed!!!!

Blindness can come from Vitamin deficiency (usually vitamin A) and mineral deficiencies. We had a real good steer go downhill in a matter of weeks due to copper deficiency and this way due to becoming blind. In this instance it would be possible that the bull in the picture could have been...

Two different schools of thought about hiefers

I think it's fairly well determined now that leaving a heifer open for an extra year will increase her productivity RELATIVE to her performance if you had bred her at ~14 months, assuming proper management. Will this equate to shorter longevity in the long run, or overall difference in...

#1 issue in animal production right now?

Thanks for the input. I had a variety of answers when I asked people for my report. One was on food safety and traceability, another on the poor markets for beef right now and how producers are looking towards new avenues (eg: grassfed beef or organic beef) just to make a profit. Being in...

#1 issue in animal production right now?

In a seminar recently we were posed the question: 'What do you consider the most important issue in the production of food of animal origin?' I did a paper and interviewed several from the industry and the general public, and the answers were quite broad. Just wondering what members of...

    Calf Picture....

Calf looks good. I agree with others that she doesn't look relaxed in the picture and has lots of leg, but she's young yet and will likely grow into them. Good luck!

    When is to early ?

45 days should be the minimum time to wait. If it were me, I would wait till she naturally comes into cycle. The uterus needs at least a month to involute after birth, which is a reason why the cow does not come into heat that soon naturally. Like someone mentioned, lutalyse will not work if she...
