The craziest thing you have seen at a cattle show

One of the best stories I've heard happened at the Toronto Royal, well before I was born.  People were sitting inside when a guy holding a rope walked in the doors. Following him was another guy, and another, and finally about ten guys all together on the same rope, but no one could see what was...

    ET success

Was just doing some reading on embryo transfers today and wondered, for those of you who use it, what your success rate is usually. Also, whether you use frozen or fresh embryos. Thanks, Sean

    Beautiful weather!

Today it was a balmy 15 degrees celcius in Manitoba (Winnipeg anyways), here on the 8th of November! Anyone else experiencing these wonderful temperatures and unreal weather? Beats 3 feet of snow and minus 20 weather.

Mats or NO Mats for your trailer?

Do people really have that many problems with just bedding and foot issues? I realize that we just have wood floors and use bedding and have never had a problem, but are aluminum floors that hard on cattle feet? Seems like a lot of extra work to use both bedding and mats.

    opinions on calf***Updated!***

You've got a very sweet looking heifer. Very feminine looking and trememdous hip and quarter from the picture that I am looking at. Should do very well with her wherever you take her.

What to feed a Bull 5years old

A good bull should only really need hay for energy to maintain body condition over the winter, depending on how extreme the temp. is. If feeding grain, use very little and something like rolled oats rather than barley.

leave it on or take it off

I'll agree with what the consensus seems to be: take it off. Its safer for the animals and like CAB said, once their semi-broke getting the halter back on is pretty easy.

Very solid looking prospect. Make sure to post some pics of him this spring!

    Newborn question

I agree I wouldn't worry about it unless problems start occurring. I've had calves that worried me a bit the first few days with how bow legged their back legs looked...couldn't notice anything wrong in a few weeks and turned out fine.

    Halter Breaking stubborn calf

Yes good point; always tie them high when they're still being broke.

    Halter Breaking stubborn calf

Whenever I have this problem I will start by putting them in a chute and tying them up in there first, to get them used to a halter is nothing else. Then I will move them to the barn. If they're still wacko, I just let them tire themselves out. As long as someone's there to make sure they stay...

new pictures of my steer! (look)

Certainly got him quiet enough anyways!

    Bawling Steer

Yes cattle are gregarious animals, so being alone especially after having some buddies before that would make him feel lonely. To some degree the stress is probably affecting his growth(feed intake), but probably very minor. Another cow as a companion would be best but i'm sure other livestock...

Here's my new guy- what your thought

Very nice colour. I have always been a fan of the red head and shoulders with a roan body

    White Shorthorn females

Thanks for the input. I suggested that he may be thinking of white heifer disease but that his figures were way out of proportion. I guess it can be related to most animals- like that there are no homozygous dominant white horses since they all die in while in embryo.

    White Shorthorn females

The reason this was brought up in class was because in many species the white phenotype actually has a far lower survival rate than the usual wild type or dominant colour, and thats how Shorthorns got lumped in. Its goes deeper than the colour but down to the genetics of it all but in my opinion...

    White Shorthorn females

I completely agree. I asked him after class ended where these figures came from/who did the study. I have never heard of white calves being any less fertile than red or roan or red/white which is why I was curious. 50% seemed out of whack and I'm waiting to see the publication this was based on...

    Sun Country Shorthorn Female sale

Gotta love the picture of the bull taking a bath on the last page of your catalogue!

    White Shorthorn females

I am starting an advanced genetics class at university this year and since Shorthorns have interesting things happening genetically, they are used in many examples. The other day the prof mentioned that homozygous for white colour tends to be a detrimental phenotype, which I had already known...

    blue heeler matings

Have a blue healer/border collie cross...pretty useless around the cattle. The blue healer in her seems to go for the heals in one instance, and then she'll turn around and go for the head like a collie. Friendly dogs but not working dogs from my experience.
