Old Shorthorn Genetics still in use

Thanks for the comments Gary and Librarian.  I actually ended up with 2 bull calves from Clippers Jubilee.  The second one is a June and he looks like he could be quite good, so we will grow him out too.  Luckily for me, both of the Clipper calves are TH free!  I agree the the 5c calf is more...

Old Shorthorn Genetics still in use

Thanks for the comments.  I live near Columbus, but the calves are on feed at A&T Cattle south of Hay Springs.

Old Shorthorn Genetics still in use

I have been playing with crossing some older genetics on newer genetics. The pictures are: Fairview President 5C (Kenmar President 26a x Studers Trendsetter daughter) Fairview Clipper (DMH Clippers Jubilee x Rosabell (Haumont breeding)

    Surge

Thanks for sharing all.  I enjoy the benefit of your cumulative knowledge of the history of the breed.

How goes the meeting in KC for the ASA?

I felt it was a good meeting with a lot of good discussion.  Worth attending.

    2015 Shorthorn Bulls

For some maternal, growth and volume.  I would recommend several bulls: Saskvalley Bonanza or a son Eionmor Marquis or a son.  We have semen on Studers Trendsetter 31T.  His first daughters are calving and producing quite good.  The Diamond Prophecy calves I have seen are nice, too. I am sure...

    Exciting Times For Canadian Shorthorns

Things are going well with Shorthorns in Nebraska.  A&T is sold out and Aaron even sold a bull for me to a commercial rancher to put on black cows.  If you raise the kind of cattle they want, they will buy them.  I know Hoffrogge and Galbreath are seeing a lot of interest from commercial...

    Barn Cameras for Calving

l have a system purchased from Lorex technologies.  It has been very handy.  I will echo a few things from previous posts:  you don't disturb the cows, you don't have to throw on coveralls when it is 30 below to run out to the barn at 3:00 am, my wife es it when I am traveling.  I do not have 7...

    show type?

I agree he will feed well.  It is not to late to band him.  He looks like he has some good parts.  Some won't like him if he has to much leather under his neck.  But if he is hairy, that will clean-up some.

    natural selection during environmental change?

I would expect the cattle to travel well.  Cattle usually make the transition to hard grass better than the reverse transition.  Roy Lovaas told me of someone moving a herd from NY to Nebraska, I assume he was talking of you.  Where are you headed to?  I live near Columbus, NE.  My web site is...

    President 26a bull calf

He is a late February calf.  I will get a better picture later.  He is getting better with age, this is my first 26a calf, so I guess I am waiting to see how he turns out.  He definitely knocks birth weight out of them.  Nothing over 75 lbs. thus far.  They won't be big frame scores, but they...

    President 26a bull calf

I know not the best picture and I was surprised by the color pattern.  My boy was playing with the camera.  I bred 26a to 2 roan cows and got calves with white marks, the red cow I bred him to had a solid red heifer.

    Homo Polled Shorthorn AI sires

We just sent in Studers Trendsetter 31T and JDMC Saskvalley Remedy 34S in to use in a new DNA test they are trying to validate for horned and polled for the Shorthorn breed.  Both bulls have been mated to enough to horned cattle without siring horned calves, that they should be homozygous...

    Alta Cedar Code Red

Are you asking about the first Alta Cedar Code Red out of Alta Cedar Signature?  If so, I used him one season.  You need to use him on cows with volume, otherwise the calves lacked volume.  I do have one cow in production that turned out well, she is coming with her second calf.  Her first calf...

    Weston Trademark 3rd "Fillet" sons

I am referring to Dennis Hoffrogge from DMH near Sleepy Eye, MN.  The Clipper King sure is a tank.  That Surprise bull may not have as much to him, but he profiles well and might even have some appeal to the show ring guys.  I suggest you get them ultrasounded, so you can get some carcass data...

    Weston Trademark 3rd "Fillet" sons

Can you picture the other two bulls?  Dennis showed me calf pictures of the Cliiper King son.

A&T Renegade 124 calves and video

I actually saw Mr Gus  80c as a mature bull in 1996 and 1997 and probably 100 calves and 50 bred heifers and at least a few 3 year olds.  I will tell you that he looked a lot like Marquis 86G, but he should they have the same mother.  I have video of him, but I don't think I have a picture.  I...

    Size of a calving pen????

The larger pens are nicer, but don't go any smaller than 12 x 12.  You need that much room, if you have to use a calf puller.  Especially if it happens to be a breech.

Barn camera setup I need, is it out there?

Mine doesn't run through internet.  It could, but I would need an IP address.  One of my coworkers has one that works like that.  His farm is five miles from his house.  He can access it from anywhere with a computer.  He justs pays for the IP address for 3 months per year during calving...
