Firewater on a high Maine cow?

The Firewaters are good cattle, I had a Firewater/Red Angus daughter produce a nice steer last year out of a Blonde/MaineX Commercial bull. Picture attached. The picture isn't the best but gives you a decent idea. The calf was born at 85 lbs. and weaned at 835 lbs. at 210 days on no creep!

    Charolais Cows

Charguy, I purchased a group of heifers that were all out of Firewater as well as I split a flush with a breeder with Canadian rights to him. I have a quite a few daughters out of him now. I have used his son Turton by AI and his calves are very similar.

    Charolais Cows

Mark H, I have a couple older cows that I purchased as Full French (but unregistered). I used Jezabel before and got some big but flashy calves. I intend to use him more in the future. These older cows and Jezabel influenced cattle that I have are best crossed with the Firewater and Revelation...

    Charolais Cows

Mark H, My cows go back to Wyoming Wind, Cigar and I tried All State on a Montezuma daughter. His calving ease is good, nice 80lbs. calves. But, it seems the finished product is always different. I have one really good one going back to the Wind, but the others are good, bad, okay and anything...

    Charolais Cows

I have used Firewater, Montezuma, Revelation and All State. By far, the best calves are the Firewater calves. They put some bone in, lots of muscle, easy fleshing and are easy on the move. In my opinion, the Firewater calves can be a little higher strung than the others. My Montezuma calves...

    Charolais Cows

Easy choice for me would be TR Mr Firewater or DR Revelation. Both are Charolais and produce very showy offspring. Both are also chosen for calving ease and moderate frame.

    Our Christmas Present!

Wow, a really nice cow! With a good bull calf at side. I imagine she'd raise a nice heifer. Congrats on a live calf though!  <beer>

    Semen Questions??

I have recently acquired a package deal of semen and have gotten a few bulls that I don't have any idea what they are, some are supposed to be Shorthorn, but there could be anything in here(keep in mind I am not familiar with Shorthorn breed): If you have any pictures of these bulls or any info...

Heifer Calf with a twisted rear leg?

This calf is up and standing and nursing on its own, it is doing very well! I am thinking the cow may have eaten something poisonous on pasture and it may have had this affect. I am not totally sure. I have had other calves from the exact same bloodlines come out just fine. Thanks for your...

Heifer Calf with a twisted rear leg?

She is purebred Blonde d' Aquitaine; I thought th was only Shorthorn/shorthorn influenced? Otherwise the calf is 100% good, she is up and around and is healthy otherwise.

Heifer Calf with a twisted rear leg?

We had a calf born this morning that has three good legs and one back leg is bent back about half way up the cannon bone. Any suggestions for cause or solution?

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

We have a basket feeder and take the net wrap off. We have had cows choke on twine and net wrap before. If you google image 'hay saver feeder' the one that we have is the first picture listed. It is an excellent choice of feeder and we save lots of hay using it.

If I could start all over again I would......?

If I could change one thing it would be that I would have focused more on purchasing show stock. In the beginning, they were just cows producing stocker calves. Now I've had to cull a lot and lose some investment to get where I want to be.

    Showmanship-class deal breakers

In any show that I have seen the judges look for two things: how well the calf is shown and how easily you can present yourself while doing so. I am a full believer that if a show person has good posture and an easy way with the stick that an easy 2-3 placings can be gained. Even if that calf...

    Nitrogen Tanks

It depends on how much semen you have. I know that I have about 400 doses and I have a tank that holds about 500. If you can fit all of your semen in there comfortably then it should be fine. Instead of buying new, its always smart to shop for good used ones. I went to an auction sale and got...

    first heifer. opinions?

She is a good heifer, what I call a 'diamond in the rough'. She may not be the prettiest right now, but with the right feed and some TLC she will turn into something decent. Firstly, get her in front of the feed bucket. Secondly, get her clipped (head, topline, rear). Work her hair. To get good...

New Walks Alone Heifer *Updated Pictures Added*

A really nice heifer! I would not suggest breeding her to Capiche. I have had two calves off of him crossed with my commercial cows and they were terrible. Neither had any performance and both were very small at birth and had no vigor. This could just be my experience, but take it for what its...
