Breeding a MAB Heifer for calving ease????

It depends on what your goal is.  I bred some MAB heifers to Rapid Rewards since they could be TH and RR is not.  Also, RR is calving ease and produced the Grand Champ at Houston this year.  Also, I used Smokin Joe on a group of heifer this year and they are were born small and look great as...

    Dream On Bull

Dream On has been the most popular Simmental bull in the history of the breed--more progeny than any other bull in the breed.  If you are looking for an out cross to Dream On, you would be interested in one that was labeled "Dream On Free" or one having no Dream On in his pedigree.  There are...

Charolais heifer- is she worth hauling around?

That heifer is so moderate and chubby for a Charolais.  I don't know about the show ring without seeing her in person or at least a good video of her in motion and from the rear but I would love to have her in my breeding pen.  There are so many ways to breed her.  She has got to work!

    Outcross Bull

I used Smokin Joe (Glover bull) on some clubby heifers this year.  Calves are born small, cool looking and grow good.  He is double clean.

Questions about fall born clubby calves

Yes, like crystalcreek says, there is a good market for good fall born steer prospects in Texas.  Try an ad in Steer Planet when he gets a little older. I like the Built Right/Monopoly pedigree.  You may be able to market him as a bull.  I bet the females would be pretty good out of him. You...

    Cows With Guns, Well Almost!

Thanks. Actually, the black cow that is doing the killing is a very gentle, halter broke Simmental cow. She just doesn't like wild hogs.

    Thomas Ranch Dispersal

Don't know why but prices are always higher at dispersal sales. Maybe that's why?

    Cows With Guns, Well Almost!

There are about 30 baby calves in this pasture.  The momma cows did not like the presence of a sounder of hogs this morning.  I shot a couple of the sows and the cows pitched in.  I saw them do this to a coyote once but I didn't have a camera. https://youtu.be/i67PgbA4bno

Favorite calves of yours this year

That is a nice, big butted heifer!

    First Time Heifers

Mark, I don't understand why you would be hesitant to use the bull "on a first calver-particularly being part simm."  I have found the opposite to be true:  my Simmental cross heifers are some of the easiest calvers I have ever owned.  :)

Favorite calves of yours this year

Nice calf and grass! Ours is all brown now! Here are a couple of my August babies that I like. Paint heifer is by Yellow Repo out of a Monopoly cow. Smoke bull call is a Monopoly X FROSTPROOF.

Best Charolais Bull to Add Depth

Sorry, just saw this but, no, I haven't.  I did flush a cow this spring to Fu Man Chu.  Got 16 grade 1 eggs and plan to put a few in this fall.

Best Charolais Bull to Add Depth

Why not breed her to Monopoly or Fu Man Chu?  If the cow is registered Charolais you could show the heifer as a composite Char.

    Steers popping pasterns

Some of the clubby genetics are prone to problems with pasterns.  So, it may not be something you can't fix with a supplement.  Never tried it but I have heard from one of the best in the business that trimming the hooves can help.  Good luck!

    EMBRYO CLASSIFICATION AND GRADING

I have my embryologist put the grade 3 eggs (if any) in fresh and freeze the 1s and 2s and toss the degenerates.  Always too many eggs and not enough recips at my place so it makes sense to sort for quality.  Dr. Elsden, are you saying that grade 4 embryos are worth transferring?

    Mab dead

ClubCalf 316 makes a great point about MAB "He had a kind and gentle demeanor and most everyone that ever worked with him, including myself had a soft spot for him. His great demeanor has carried over into most of his offspring and for many people made breaking a calf fun and easy.!"  I too used...

    pink eye Iodine

Not sure about the iodine but keeping flies under control will help a lot. As for the search function, it is located at the very top of each page.  Next to login, logout.  Good luck!

    Wild Cattle

If you can cut off their water supply so they have to come to the corral for water, you will have them back in the corral within 24 hours.  They will come to water no matter what.  Then make sure your gates are secure and load them up.  Good luck!
