The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

One of my favorites for making females back in the day was Pineview Jazz.  We had some good ones, and nearly every one had that trademark big, bold spot on one cheek. One of the top 5 females on the place, ever, was BCC Miss Signal 102P.  She was a little (for the time, anyway) 6 frame cow...

Questions about an old angus bull

Didn't take the time to confirm that this bull is the Matrix bull that was in Genex several years ago...assuming so.  I saw that Matrix at stud.  He was incredibly deep sided...certainly one of the deepest bulls that I had ever seen in my life.  But, he was also quite narrow.  Everything he...

    Trailer tires

Though most trailers seem to come with 10 ply tires, we upgrade all of our various trailers to 14 Ply.  Another thing to consider.  We've blown too many 10 plys....

Anybody Else Feeding hay in June?

Sounds like Ohio is tough.  Central Nebraska is not good, but we are holding on.  Dryland crops are in dire need of moisture.  The more marginal pastures are in trouble.  Hay prices are soaring.

    Help with Simmy semen codes?

I think leanbeef's memory is pretty good...all that pedigree info seems correct.  Magician was a good bull in his day...

    implanting into recip cows

"worst in my opinion is buying embryos that are "sitting in the tank" and have been there a while   ... probably some already got put in and weren't so great... therefor the rest are still "in the tank"... it really takes some fortitude to destroy embryos whose flushmates didn't hit the mark ...

    Hauling Post-Breeding

I think this has been discussed on here before, but I can't locate a thread. What is everyone's take on hauling after A.I. or E.T. is done?  My question is...if you keep them around until they are thought to be safe in calf...after day 25 say...how soon is it safe to haul then?  Safe 35 days...

    Hay Producers

A much, much needed 1.30 of rain last night.  We are in a tough spot.  1st cutting Alfalfa went up early, but at only 30 to 60% of last year's tonnage.  So many have broken up grass for row crops this year, that the hay market could get very interesting.  The more marginal pastures look like...

Disposable Syringe or Repeat Syringe Gun

When you have the big projects, you better have something different than a small disposable, or all your getting done is filling... I've kinda wondered about cross-contamination, but I think a good soap and water wash would get rid of most potential problems.  Anything left in a gun would be a...

    Semen Tank Question

My dad left the plug out overnight once last year (could've shot him) on our small thank...there was still 18cm in the tank the next morning...checked 2 straws from the top of canes...perfectly fine.

    Football

Doc Tom never seemed to be a fan of the Big 12 brass.  As a fan-base, we were ready for the change.  I would've been fine taking some of our geographic neighbors with us, but it didn't work out that way...Some will argue that Nebraska was bitter as we didn't fare as well in football in the Big...

    Walks Alone & I-80

Breeding a few of the Simmental and Sim-Angus cows trying for a few show steers for the kids... A.I. tech has Walks Alone and I-80 in his tank.  Any thoughts on those 2 bulls?  I know Walks Alone is a carrier, and I-80 is clean.  Cows will be around the 6 frame with plenty of body.  I want to...

    Football

Gotta chime in because I love college football...if for no other reason. A & M...be happy you are gone for the Big 12...things are alot better out there...but the SEC will be mighty tough to compete in... My take on road trips.  Had a good friend in College Station at the 6-3 debacle a couple...

Simmental Bull- WS Beef Maker R13

Can't give much information, as we have only 1 calf on the ground....but an indication of my thoughts on the calf is that we've used 7 units so far this year....Like the heifer calf alot and the epds are stellar...

    Standing heat a 1:00pm?

In my opinion, late tonite would be best (10 p.m.), but we always used to breed everything starting standing after noon the next morning. Be much simpler if the cows would all read the manual and come in at the correct times!
