I dont have a pic, but my friend has a really sweet Maine Man steer this year. Hes not quite as soggy/soft made as some may like and he lacks some muscle, but hes got an I-80 front end and is really stylish. He still has quite a bit of grow too.
I went to the PA farm show and I actually took a flyer! It is the Interstate Preview. It's all species and is June 20-21. The website is www.interstatepreview.com and they also have Facebook page. Hope this helps!
I have recently wormed him and we also weigh his feed. He was eating around 18 lbs before he went off a few weeks ago. Now he is down to 8 or less. I feel like I am doing everything they say to do when a calf goes off feed, but i just cant get him back. Thank you guys.
Thank you for your replies. He does have a eating mate. He is also limited on hay. I am sticking to schedule and he is eating twice a day. This feed has worked for many and that's why i am so concerned. We actually have a jackpot show in 2 weeks that I wanted to go to but now it isnt looking so...
I have had multiple issues over multiple years with steers not eating. This year i got sick of it and went ahead and purchased an higher priced (than our normal budget) show feed from the local co-op. Its a 12% with flaked corn and a nice molasses scent. My steer still will not eat. We have...
we have a lamb rail that we tie our lambs up on everyday. This gets them used to being tied up and also allows them to harden that muscle in their rear end. It also helps with bracing
My pet peeve is when exhibitors are rude to eachother. I've been in the ring where people behind me will run their calves to close and get spit and foam all over my calf. I have also been circled around (out of a class of 10, they only went around me). Judges have made comments and one girl in...
We currently have a steer that has a small twist. It takes away from his eye appeal but its not that much of an issue. If you pull away the hairs, the very tip is bald. Will this ever grow back? Is there anything you can do to help this? Thanks!
what type is he? If he is American influence he may be better fit to show in that class. You cant tell much from the picture, but i wouldn't call him a show steer. If you are showing just for the experience though he will probably make a good project to teach you with. But thats just my opinion...
If anyone knows- do implants help eating habits? I have heard that they decrease carcass value in terminal animals and fertility in breeding animals, but not sure if this is true either.
First of all, thank you two for your advice. I do have one question. VC- What do you mean by "looser made"? Could you elaborate on this? I really liked the way you explained the differences between fats and prospects!
I just wanted to see what people thought about choosing prospects. Is there a method to pick one out that will be a good prospect and become a good fat? It may sound like a dumb question, but there are people in my county who usually buy two calves that will show well as prospects and two that...
