    Couple of Bull calves.

Went back home this weekend and picked out a couple of bull calves to show this summer. Both are purebred Limos born May. Pics are from September. They also had an April 09 heifer just calf two weeks ago that I'll be showing...no pics of her yet though. What do you think? They were two of 5...

    weigh-in weight shrinkage

Sorry for the ignorant question, but why hold them off feed for weigh-in? The only benefit I see from this is that, in weight classes, the animal has a better chance of being the fattest in the class. This is opposite to what the kids at our show do, which is try and stuff them before...

    Help with this steer's hair

The "curls" on the back leg are a drag. We usually trim off the part that is curling back, leaving the straight part of the hair. Usually it will keep growing straight. Although this steer already has better hair than anything we get around here. :)

    Ideas..hints...suggestions??

I agree with earthmover. Spray it with pressured water for a while. It forces the water inside the small cracks of the crap and softens it up. Then take a curry comb to it and it should come right off if you have sprayed it enough.

    Best shade tree by cattle

Hmm, Aspen grow up to 3 metres/year and readily sprout shoots from ground. :P

    Washing and rinsing????

Sounds like a good plan. Will give it a try. We always have problems with the steers getting crap on their legs, then it only comes out if it snows, or they wait til spring...which is def. not good.

M Lazy Heart Ranch new sale method

This is cool. I have never done this with cattle, but with other species, I find it works best for the ones that there will def. be competition for.

    Some new steers!

We picked up these steers today. Since last post on this thread, they've been castrated, weaned and branded. They also have their winter fur already so they look quite differetn than these pics...no new pics though because the've been penned up and look hideous. Anyway, Steer in pic#1 weighed...

    Just reminiscing: old pics.

Sorry if I post too many pics and talk too much. :P I'm just thinking out loud as I contemplate moving beyond our once a year District show, into much tougher Regional and Provincial shows with Purebreds(Bulls, heifers and Cow/Calf),  and perhaps even getting into "club calves". This is a big...

    Just reminiscing: old pics.

This brings us to 2010. Was a wierd year. We had 3 steers place first...the rest placed bottom 2 or 3. All of the three top steers were Limos. Two of which were sired by half brother of a Limo steer I already posted, and our calves we picked this year. First picture is the second ever steer our...

I think the dirty barn air got my lens dirty and I was too lazy to clean it. :)

    Just reminiscing: old pics.

That was our benchmark year. Year later in 2009, we took one first, one second and three thirds. First pic is my market lamb for 08. Totally different that show lambs in the US. She always had a smile! She took runner-up and Best-Groomed. Second was Grand Champ steer in 09. He weighed 1465...

    Just reminiscing: old pics.

So i've just been looking at all these MaineX show calves. It always gets me wondering if we will try our hand at MaineX calves here. But I think back to the last only MaineX calf we had. He was pretty nice. Our club took 7 of the 10 top spots in weight classes that year. For the first time...

    Smokies - Experiment

    K. Thanks for the info. Do you have any pics of your smokie calves? I don't know what it is, but I just like Limos...prob because they are the only breed in these parts that show any muscle expression other than chars. I also like the "Maine" look...but there is just something about them...

    Smokies - Experiment

Yes. :) But now that you say that...if it's homo black, the calves would be black as well?

    Smokies - Experiment

Hey, So I was reading around on here. Came across a paragraph that Charolais white acts as a diluter colour. Therefore, redxcharolais = tan, yellow colour range and blackxchar=grey smokies. True? If so, here are my thoughts for my experiment: I really love high yielding Limos. But they aren't...
