Favorite thing to do at a cattle show or on show day?

Reminiscing old times with old timer that come along and visit. Trouble is I'm now getting to the point that I'm one of them.

Favorite thing to do on a farm or ranch?

For me it's checking cows in the evening in the front pasture where I head to my Dad's favourite spot on the whole farm and look out to the north across the river and valley to the mountains, knowing full well that his Dad and Grandfather and Great Grandfather probably stood and watched over the...

    one thing you could change

Couldn't resist and had to add another 2 cents.................does anyone hear a judge use the expression " breed characteristic" anymore or is it just me missing something...........most shows you go to now there are very few traditionally coloured cattle in some breeds. Guess that's why they...

    white heifer disease

I tend to agree with JIT on this one.

He looks great Dan. Looks to me like he carries on the Diamond tradition of easy keepers. Welcome aboard SP.

    one thing you could change

I think the all time best one I've ever heard is " the 2 year old I've started out this class with has a real sexy udder".......that kills me. If this guy looks at cows this way, I'm thinking he got a cuff up side the head from his wife on their way home. I've heard the comment on a breeding...

What ever happened to honest judges

Well said. I do judge and when I do, I go out with the attitude that I'm there to make one person happy on that day.........myself........If it's not something that I'd like walkin' my pastures, I won't pick it..........If friends are showing that day......I find out how good of a friend they...

Boning Legs for Blow and Go Show

Back in the days when I started fitting we were using saddle soap and wax. Not likely that you'll find a bar of wax these days, try a hair dresser for a jar of hair wax and experiment with it. It's going to take some time to know just how much is enough. I will work........keeps my unruly hair...

    Calgary Stampede Carcass results

Just got some info from the GM of Canadian Speckle Park Association and thought I'd pass it on. At Calgary Stampede                                       48 carcasses judged                                       6 of the top 10 were Speckle Park                                       4 of those...

The last flush of an old sire

Congrats JIT. Nice to see those old genetics being used so as generations further on will see the quality of animals our forefathers in the breed raised.

    French Fullblood Maine-Anjou picture...

Back in the 70's we had some awesome 1/2 blood steers from an old Maine bull called Coca Cola. Only for not heading in the direction of appendix Shortys my Dad should have maybe kept some of the heifers and been ahead of the times.

    Canada Day

Great idea JIT. It might raise property values in Eastern Ontario as we wouldn't have the " Pig Latin" (French) shoved down our throats.

A bull that can cross the boundaries between clubbie and cowboy cattle

Jit, I was impressed with Touchdown as a show bull but, I'm more impressed with him in his workin' clothes. You and Rick should be proud of breeding that guy.

What is the best Canadian shorthorn bull?

Tutira Captain Dutch was used extensively in the  70's. Scotsdale Rodney was an excellent bull. As far as imports.....yes Highfield Irish Mist is in alot of pedigrees, but back further in those pedigrees you'll see Bapton Constructor along with others many times also. Mandalong Super Flag would...

    First Australian Speckle Park sale

That's awesome news for the Speckle Park breed. My wife and I purchased some last fall and were lucky enough to own the Reserve Bull Calf at Agribition. He's got Clubby written all over him. I was told by 2 different breeders, upon their return from Denver that he would have fit right in with...

Ace Of Diamonds Now Available in the Canadian Market!

I agree with you Hilltop.............IMO the appendix program is there to breed cattle up in percenatage.........not down........In my area the commercial herds are a Heinz 57 already.........that makes it pretty hard to sell a bull to a commercial breeder if you tell him he's getting a...
