    Ideas for manure disposal

For those of you who have cattle in the barn, what do you do it regards to disposing of the manure? How often do you haul it off (if that's what you do)? We clean stalls daily as well as the "let-out" pen. Most days, we also haul it off with the wheel barrow and fill up low spots in the pasture...

Fly control in barn - help!

We live in Texas and the flies are AWFUL in our barn. I know they are attracted to feed and manure but both of those things are unavoidable when raising livestock. We clean stalls and dump the poop everyday - granted, the manure is dumped outside of our barn, probable 100 yards away or so (we...

    Looking for advice/tips....

We have had my daughter's steer for 3 weeks tomorrow. The first week we had him, we took it easy as far as handling him.....trying to let him get settled. He had been lead and worked with a little when we got him - so we didn't have to "break" him completely. For the most part, he's good. He...

    Feeding advice needed

We have a steer who is currently weighing 1180 and gaining an average of 1.92 lbs/day. He was gaining about 3 lbs a day up until a few weeks ago. He has stopped eating consistently.  In other words, he was cleaning all his feed up at both feedings. Now, some days he will clean it up and others...

Dumb question....I apologize ahead of time...

If someone were to tell you that a steer needs to be fatter and softer, what would that mean to you? I understand the fatter part, it's the "softer" part I need clarification on. I guess I'm just trying to see what that means to others. Also, how would you go about getting an animal fatter and...

    Steer with watery eyes

Ever since we brought my daughter’s steer home, he has had watery eyes. I’ve been treating them with the Vetricyn Pink Eye spray twice a day for two weeks but it isn’t helping. It’s so bad that his face below his eyes are wet all the time....and the flies are starting to cover his face as well...

    Share your experience/advice please

I wanted to start a thread where everyone could share a few tips and tricks that they use when bringing new show cattle "home". In my case, our steer will be the only one in the barn for a few months so that may be a little different from others who have more than one head in the barn together...

Why does our steer try to mount other steers?

My daughter showed her steer this weekend. The first day, he tried to mount two heifers- I assumed it was because they were in heat. Then yesterday, he tried to mount another steer. What would by the reason for this? I’ve been reading and one thing I came across said that implants can cause this...

What can I feed to add depth of body?

We have a steer that’s super long so he doesn’t look deep enough to me. Show isn’t until March so he may be fine with more weight but what can I add to his feed to help add depth? We are currently feeding finished and cotton seed hulls.

How to stop steer from throwing his head around when set up

When my daughter gets her steer set-up, within 30 seconds he’s throwing his head around towards her. He’s not doing it trying to “get” her he’s just throwing it around. She can’t hold his head still and straight for more than 30 seconds. He doesn’t do this with me. What can she do to correct...

    What should I do?

Several things are going on with my daughter's steer. I need some advice as to what I should do. About 2 weeks ago I gave him Banamine and Baytril for fever/respiratory junk. He was still running a fever for over a week past that. He hasn't been eating like he was either (I also gave probios for...

    Steer doesn’t like cottonseed hulls....

We feed cottonseed hulls along with finisher. This year’s steer has started not eating all of his feed and I think it’s the cottonseed hulls. What can I do to get him to eat them? Is there something I can substitute for them?

    Still running a fever??

Gave Baytril and Banamine Saturday morning. Steer is acting normal- eating and everything. Just out of curiosity I took his temp a few minutes ago- it’s 104.2. Should I be worried? Will it take a while for the meds to effect his fever??

    Sick steer- WWYD??

Before I start, I am waiting for our vet to call me back. We got my daughter’s steer about 3 weeks ago. About a week in, I noticed he had a cough- nothing terrible just enough to notice. He’s also had a little bit of thick white snot on and off- not constant. Fast forward to today- he only ate...

    Need Advice - Stubborn Steer

We've had my daughter's county fair steer for a little over a week (trust me, I am taking that into consideration). He had been worked with prior to us getting him - rinsed and tied daily. He is pretty gentle and acts great other than when we try to walk him. He's right at 700 lbs. He pulls back...

    PLEASE HELP! Sick steer...really worried

We took my daughter's steer to a show on Saturday. Starting Tuesday afternoon, he stopped eating his feed and hasn't ate any since - which is completely out of character for him. Yesterday he had a snotty nose and a lot of saliva coming from his mouth - temp was 105.6. Called the vet - he gave...

    DIY cattle Scales

We are wanting to set up scales at our barn. We want them to be the alley-way type, not permanent. We have everything but a platform at this point. We were using an old grooming chute but it finally bit the dust. Anyway, I’m looking for any and all suggestions as to the best way to do this. Has...
