Well, we got the PHA results today.....

Worst case senerio we should have had a 25% chance of each of them being carriers.  So out of 3 head we could've possibly had 1 right?  NOPE.  All three came back as carriers!  :(  We called our vet, the state university vet and basically were told Good Luck on the cow that's bred.  We haven't...

Anyone know how long PHA results are taking now?

Thanks so much everyone.  We ended up drawing on 3 head.  We decided we better go ahead and do both herd bulls eventhough one should be clean we just don't want to chance it.  We also drew on a former show heifer.  All we can do now id pray for clean results and watch carefully from here on...

Anyone else having a problem with judges..

Well, our boys were just in our state 4-H livestock judging contest and on a class of bulls they got nailed because the hammered the bulls on structure.  The bull that officially won couldn't walk and they granted that in the official reasons!!!  Needless to say our boys were  :o and a little ...

    yippee first day of school

I think we'll start school on Monday.  The boys have been helping with the silage this week and I'm hoping they finish it this weekend.  Oldest will be a freshman and youngest is in 8th grade.  I'm hoping we're prepared by Monday.  (lol)  (lol) Melinda

    how many do you have?

We run between 300 and 350 mature cows at any given time.  We buy and retain bred heifers each year and cull out some of the older cows.  We run them with fil and bil.  Most of them summer at our farm and then about 200 or so go back to their place for the winter.  Dh works a town job, I'm here...

Ours arrived today and I've yet to see the boys or the book.  May have to go searching for them soon.  (lol)  We call it the Christmas cattlelog around here.  Looking forward to the ads. Melinda

    Sore Losers

They're everywhere, but county fairs do tend to be the worst.  Our boys have often excelled at our fair and last year it finally all came to a head when some of the adults chose to pick on them.  I can sure handle the adults saying things to Mike and I but NOT to my boys.  >:(  Needless to say...

Would you sell one for $800

We have in the past but not this year.  We've come to the conclusion that we need $1000 for everything we sell.  No calf leaves the farm without being broke to lead and we offer to help clip and fit at a couple of shows for every calf.  Our heifers are the same deal and we're starting them at...

    Calf personalities help!

We have been told (and have observed it a bit this year) that the Dr. Who's will make terrific mommas but they also have a bit of attitude.  Ours has been to 15 or so shows and can still get her panties in a wad over something.  We've been told that's the Dr. Who in her coming out.  Trust me...

    Do you flush heifers?

In a word, NO. We, too, like to see them prove themselves a bit first.  So far we've not flushed anything until she's had 2 calves.  That's just us though. Melinda

    Quiz bowl questions

Hey all.  We're having a quiz bowl for a beef meeting this next Sunday for our 4-H club.  I have the questions from Texas A&M and was wondering if you knew of any other sites with questions?  Thanks so much. Melinda

    Special prayer/thought request

Thought I'd give an update on our son, Chris.  He was released from the doctor to do pretty much whatever he wanted as long as he didn't need pain med 2 weeks ago tomorrow.  He came home, jumped on the 4 wheeler and checked cows then did his chores.  LOL.  Last Thursday was his first show back...

    Special thoughts/prayers section

Thanks for including Chris in the list.  We had to have the incision reopened today due to an infection in the incision site.  :(  He'll be fine, but yet another set back.  Thanks for your prayers for him. I'm certainly praying for the others on the list. Melinda

    Any suggestions for me?

He really is being pretty good about not trying to do too much.  I'm guessing the pain when he tries something he shouldn't is working in my favor.  (lol)  Anyway, the first show he'll be out for was yesterday.  He was able to blow on her for about 10 minutes and then was able to fit her back...

    Any suggestions for me?

You know, I'd love to follow doctor's orders but honestly he was very vague.  I know the boy is still queasy when we ride.  I'm not sure how the ride to and from the show will be honestly.  He got the staples out yesterday and is rinsing both heifers each night.  I caught him trying to lead his...
