    American Cattle Numbers

I was just curious if there was any resources that showed annual purebred cattle registrations in the US, specifically for Shorthorns. I know in Canada they are available through the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, but I can't seem to find any American stats. Thanks in advance.

A quiz for Shorthorn breeders/those who use Shorthorn influence cattle.

I'm doing an extension presentation on TH and PHA in the Shorthorn breed, and I just want to get a feeling for what YOU as breeders do with cattle that are found to be TH carriers. Everyone's opinion is different. For example, I know down in the US many champion steers are TH carriers--they've...

    Too hot!

Here in western Canada we've been getting some unusually hot weather. Yesterday in MB it felt like 42 C (107 F) with the humidex. That's enough to make me melt away. http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/western-canada-heat-wave-prompts-warnings-blackouts-1.872870 How has it been further out west?

    Silage Users

I'm curious if anyone out there has tried or ever heard of anyone moving silage and then trying to repack it. I know secondary fermentation will ultimately start once the silage has been opened to the air, but I've also heard that if the weather is cold then spoilage may be reduced. In a...

    Wood Shavings

Wondering if anyone has ever had to source wood shavings in bulk form. I am looking for a supplier, located in Manitoba, Canada or within reasonable distance. Also, if anyone has bought shavings in bulk form, what prices were like, etc. Thanks in advance.

    Climate change or not?

Here in Manitoba, over the last week and a bit, we have seen temperatures at -38 C, and two days later up to -2 C. The start of this week the windchill made temperatures feel colder than -40C and last night we had rain, with the temperature being +2 C right now. Within two weeks we've have two...

#1 issue in animal production right now?

In a seminar recently we were posed the question: 'What do you consider the most important issue in the production of food of animal origin?' I did a paper and interviewed several from the industry and the general public, and the answers were quite broad. Just wondering what members of...

    ET success

Was just doing some reading on embryo transfers today and wondered, for those of you who use it, what your success rate is usually. Also, whether you use frozen or fresh embryos. Thanks, Sean

    Beautiful weather!

Today it was a balmy 15 degrees celcius in Manitoba (Winnipeg anyways), here on the 8th of November! Anyone else experiencing these wonderful temperatures and unreal weather? Beats 3 feet of snow and minus 20 weather.

    White Shorthorn females

I am starting an advanced genetics class at university this year and since Shorthorns have interesting things happening genetically, they are used in many examples. The other day the prof mentioned that homozygous for white colour tends to be a detrimental phenotype, which I had already known...

White shorthorn bull calf out of a roan cow bred to a black bull! (Canada)

We were lucky this year to have a white bull calf born out of a roan purebred shorthorn cow bred to a black 3/4 maine bull. Our blue roan steers are out of roan cows off of this black bull, but I'm sure those who breed white bulls to black cows would have good luck with this white calf. Willing...
