I stole this from a angus breeder who I am growing to appreciate. Made me think. How bout you?

Most everyone my age remembers the old Avis commercial about trying harder because they were No. 2. I don’t know where we rank in the purebred business, but it sure isn`t No. 1. But instead of trying harder, we just take it easier. While No. 1 manages his cows, our cows manage for themselves. While No.1 selects cattle that are extreme in their genetic traits, the most ribeye, the most milk, the most growth, we avoid extremes altogether. No 1  breeds for higher and higher production, we breed to cure or prevent the problems No 1 causes.

  No1-itis is a contagious disease that,unfortunately, a lot of purebred cattlemen and commercial cattlemen catch. The disease is camouflaged with feed, and spread by the dreamweaver sales managers , AI studs, and the Drs. at the universities. It was a Frame  Disease outbreak the last era that caused many to swallow an expensive and bitter pill; and now the first destructive symptoms of the “carcass craze” are showing up as no butt, no nuts, no guts, and non-functional cows. It is still early and not yet an epIdemic; but it will help keep the average lifespan of an Angus breeder at under 7 years. The “sugar daddy” herds will eventually retire or regroup to be the next “new and improved” No 1, but those without life support from another source will die a quiet death.

  It doesn`t have to be that way; there is a place for carcass{on the plate} and a place for the cow{in the pasture}; the dreamweavers lie is that both can be had in one animal with consistency. The cow and the carcass isn`t a which came first, the hen or the egg, dilemna; the cow came/comes first, and always will. Without efficient reproduction, there is no carcass {except the cow herself.}

#1-itis is what the clubbie world revolves around. No one wants to buy the number two steer, finish second, or sell the second highest seller. That's just the way it is when things are based on the show ring.

I have always held, and argued the belief that I would rather have a sire/cow that has solid good calves all the time, rather than the one hit wonder. I would rather own a cow in the top 20% in every catagory, than be in the top 1% in just one. I would rather buy from a breeder that has an entire herd of good cows, than someone who owns just one great one.  I would rather buy from someone with a program rather than a plan.

I have seen plenty of #1-itis. Those that have that it, ususally have a short life and die a slow sad death. (Not all, granted but most) Many change breeds, change hobbies, change careers trying to achieve #1-itis. Most never do.

I think there are a number of Angus bulls out there that are of a harder keeping type. However the commercial guys still buy them cause they max out the yearling epd's. jmo

The only animal that can have the amazing carcass and pasture functionality consistently is the Charolais!  Couldn't help myself y'all!  (lol)

Nobody remembers who got second . . . . and if you're not first, you're last.  ;D

Trev.....just got a sale catalog on the upfront sale. Its crazy.  61 lots. Looking at the pedigrees there are 4 lots that actually had the ranches prefix on a dam or sire. Is that an example of a me to program or what. Of course he's a director of the breed. I always wondered what would happen if you had a Marty Loving or Rick Leone or someone like that as directors. Not a tax deduction outfit. Probably would'nt  make a difference. But one always wonders. :)

aj, that catalog cost more to get out than I have made this year. I got two for some reason (pop). I believe that fella is a good guy and I don't know him personally but if thats not a groundhog day sale then I don't know what is. It will make all sorts of money from the trading going on. Cyclone has always been buying embryos and pregs like crazy last few years. This is the fruits of those labors.
