I'm sure more than we would want, but 1680 was one of the first big carcass bulls in the An breed, so probably not as much as if he would have been more clubbie looking. MO. Brent

I've got a list of 184 AI sires with 1680 in their pedigree and while there are Balancer, Gelbvieh, Red Angus, and SimAngus bulls in the list, there aren't any Maines.

All of these are bulls you can buy semen on.  I wouldn't call them all AI sires, some are just bulls collected by their owners that have inventory at a small bull stud.

how much 1680 is in the maine breed?

If you are talking about purebred cattle (vs all the various "mutts" now registered by the AMAA) I would guess very little for a couple of reasons - the movement to turn R&W Maines to black started in the 1970's and Precision 1680 was born in 1990. The goal in making Maines black as I understand it was to - 1) make them black 2) make them prettier and 3) moderate frame - from all accounts 1680 was a great carcass and numbers bull but not much to look and he passed those traits on

I think you are being a little racist here against modern day genetics. I think there are a lot of cattle being registered now by the AMAA that I would definitely not call mutts.

It sounds like you guys are a little racist to the angus breed.  ;)  As some of you may know I am an Angus breeder and 6807 was more than just a carcass bull.  He actually had some look for an Angus bull in his time.  If he was used to blacken up the cattle he probably did that and a lot more.  I'm sure he added some much needed softness to the maine look while also addressing a need to help with structural corectness.  A great added bonus is the 6807 females make awesome cows!  I am not trying to take anything away from the Maine breed.  Heck, I love the stout clubbies that you see that decend from them!

I'm confused - we are talking GAR Precision 1680 (from whom most of the CCS seems to arise) not Traveler 6807 (who is a good looker if I do say so!) ::) ::)

My bad!  It''s been a long day!  I guess my brain didn't process the numbers correctly!  (lol)  I totally agree with you now that I realize that you are talking about 1680.  I think what gave some of his calves the nice look are the really good cows that he was bred to.  I never bred to him because of the comments posted above.  Gardiner bulls with the exception of maybe Grid Maker are flat muscled with no look.

Amen Cattledog, Amen.  There have been a couple decent GAR bulls, but I am NOT a fan.  I too agree, flat muscled, narrow topped, fine boned, and no performance if you don't feed them like feedlot cattle.  I'm sure that I'll hear about this, but that's my opinion.  There have been some good 1680 calves out there.  I had a couple of them, but they were out of awful good cows.

Agreed..  the majority of these cattle don't  have the look so weren't used in the show industry.

it's odd how our 1680 son has some pretty stout angus calves with more bone than most angus bulls. i really think they are some of the clubbier angus calves i've seen.
here's a calf that is double bred 1680. i know it isn't the best picture and all but he really does express a lot of muscle and thickness for an angus.

my bad, always forget to resize.
here it is a little smaller. he's not real old in this pic but he looks even better now. if it wasn't for the curly calf syndrome stuff, we'd probably keep him as a bull. right now we are a little undecided.
