Chaco's (Red Angus) first calf is here, 82 lbs out of our biggest & heaviest BW cow so I expect lower weights on the rest (pictured at 6 days old).  Easy-born & up nursing withing 20 minutes.  Sorry about the quality of pics - I hate my camera, or it could just be the photographer!  Next up is a Caphice calf (hopefully a heifer too) out of our matriarch Shorthorn cow.

Nice calf. Is it a heifer? I like the idea of using a Shorthorn on a heifer like that. Could be a really, really good one...

@JTM, yes it is a heifer but all Red Angus (sire is my avatar).  We have both reds and Shorthorn - have done some crossing to produce Durham Red & really like that combination.  The grandsons have shown steer crosses in the Production Steer contests here & won or placed 2nd every time.  The birthweights on the shorts scared the heck out of us when we first started 'cause we were so used to the reds, so we don't use a SH bull on the red heifers!

Don't blame you there. Although there are a good number of Shorthorn bulls that would work on your heifers. You've got a good thing going there for sure. I would probably do the same thing if people weren't so color blind around here...

Forgot to add another pic of the Red Angus heifer, and a pic of our TM Gus Shorthorn bull calf (at 5 months)!
