Well the boy I have been helping this year, is currently at our county fair (bought a calf from me last year, I helped him find this calf this year) He does not have a cooler it is fans and rinsing and brushing only. He showed yesterday. This is his second year with a steer and is planning on raising one next year for his alumni year. He is a good kid who's parents just do not have any idea about livestock but do all they can to help him on his projects, he also has a sow that he breeds and sells the offspring from to the kids at school for the fair, as well as FFA President.

X-bar, Yes they changed it from the Del Mar Fair to the San Diego County Fair about 10 years ago, I do not think that Del Mar like being associated with the fair. Although it had been the Del Mar Fair for decades. We had about 70 head of market steers and heifers this year.

The boys market heifer was Reserve FFA chapion market heifer as well (12 head) The Champion Market Heifer was the Reserve FFA Champion a 1326 pound tank.

Steer ended up Grand Champion, topped allot of calves that cost more than what he did.

thats really cool! congrats. Its so nice to hear about kids that come from no agricultural background and end up doing really well from pure hard work. I come from the same type of family and hopefully someday I can be like your tutee as well.  (thumbsup)

Just keep doing your best, and put in the work. Allot of things went right for the boy, he got a good calf for low dollars, he was an ET calf he just had a bad recip for a Momma, the breeder told the boy he would take off once on full feed, he did. Calf never got sick or went of feed, we had a mild winter. It takes all the pieces coming together at the right time, calf hit the perfect size and weight at the right time without needing to be held. All of that, hard work and a little luck is what it took.

I thought so. Last time I was there was for a PINK concert.  That area offers everything though- del mar beach, the fair, the horse track - so much enjoyment.  IMO it's one of the most desirable places in the country.

Where are most of the kids from that are showing - east like Ramona or?

Congrats on the show!

Can't beat it this time off the year for the animals it is currently 95-100 deg in the valleys 78 @ the fair grounds, they rebuilt the barns about 9 years ago, high ceilings and giant fans.
Most kids are from the north county and east county, Lakeside, El Cajon, Valley Center, Fallbrock, Ramona, Escondido, Vista and areas in between. We still get over 200 hogs,100 lambs, 40 goats and 70 steers.

I think it is fantastic that you get that kind of participation!  We are in Nebraska and show in 2 counties.  One gets barely those numbers, and the other doesn't get half that.

Great story too!
