5-day vs 7-day Fixed TAI

Which method do you prefer, and which have you had best conception rates with? Can't decide which I want to use, I don't care if one takes more labor I just want the highest conception rate possible.

I have never used the 5 day, though I have seriously considered it on some show heifers.  In research studies, the 5-Day has a slightly higher conception rate, in my opinion the advantage is pretty insignificant though. So for me I just call it pretty straight up, and as you said the 5-Day requires an extra shot in there, which isnt only more work(especially when you have to pen cows and work them in order to give that shot) but it is also more expense. So for us we have just always chosen to do the 7 Day protocal.

I use 7 day, works with calendar alot better and if you don't TAI them 2 weeks after your first lute just lute em again. Have not heard 5 is any better so I stick with 7

Used the 5 day and LOVED it! I liked the timing of the injections and TAI better and had much improved results. Well worth the extra shot of prostaglandin.

Used the 5-day last year on 20 head and got 10 ai calves this year but I think it conception was a little better cause 3 of those 20 I think aborted the calf due to the heat and didn't rebreed til 3 months later. The others that didn't stick got bull bred within 2 cycles. We had a several guys in the area with a lot of opens or really late bred last year due to a very hot summer. I haven't decided on the 5 or 7 day protocol for this year. 5-day cost me about $48/head shots,cidr,and semen.

Another quick question...I have a cow that would be getting the PG shot 42 days after calving, they say to wait 45 days after calving. Would I be ok going at 42 or should I wait and hit her with the next group?

I would. I've been successful with second calf heifers 30 days pp.
