WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) — The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week has six other children and never expected to have eight more when she took fertility treatment, her mother said.Angela Suleman said her daughter expects a big challenge raising 14 children. The good news, she said, is all the babies appear healthy.Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined.Dr. Harold Henry said the woman was already pregnant when she came to Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, and she was counseled about the risks of her pregnancy and on the option of aborting some of the fetuses. Doctors had been expecting only seven babies, but an eighth was born in the cesarean delivery.

that's because she wasn't listening.  she should pay for the whole thing out of her pocket with NO help from anyone.

she was told all the potentialities and chose to go ahead anyway.

here's a regulation.

no fertility drugs to ANYONE who already has 2 babies.

no decision should go unpunished.

Why would you take fertility drugs in the first place w/ 6 other children? Maybe a mental evaluation needs to be done before anyone gets that treatment?

I am with you all. There should have been a pysch evaluation prior to her fertility treatments.

How much you want to bet that their will be some public assistances involved? I use to work in the ER and you would see the "gold card" used for sniffles, cough the child had for three weeks. BECUZ the ER was free with no out of pocket expenses and the doctor's office had a co-pay. Could never understand this.

And if I am corret she is NOT married.  That is what blew me out of the water.

I agree if you have 2 kids already - no fertility drugs

I can not imagine.  She does need her head examined.  I only have 1 child who is reasonably well behaved, and i am still nervous about the thought of adding to that  :)

Just a wild guess, can you say my own reality show. I can't even imagine the bill for the delivery. 46 PPL in the delivery room. The reality, poperotcy,(SP), craze drives me nuts. Period. Brent

How did she pay for the fertility treatment to begin with.  IVF is not cheap.    I don't believe in overregulating but since the taxpayer is undoubtedly going to pick up the tab on this one..  how about a law saying no more than 2 embryos implanted and no fertility treatment at all if you have over what .. 2 or 3  kids - I'm not sure at what number you should draw the line??      Did you hear where she is living with her parents now due to a bankrupcty & loss of her own home. There is no father ever mentioned.    Her own father is returning to his native Iran so he can work to pay for this in his old joby which was somehow involved in military arms.    OH MY!!

On another note.. how are the babies doing and do they expect all of them to make it?

From what I heard today, all the babies are off the vent or breathing machines. But they were 9 weeks early. SO, you have to basically keep them an tl they are healthy weight usually over 4 lbs and grow them. My experience has been that they usually spend the time they would have spent in utero in the hospital. They will have to give them surfactant to make their lungs develop and basically finishing cooking them in the nursery. This would be a couple million when its done for sure. It doesn't take long to add up.

if she can pay for them, have at it.  the public should not be forced to pay for this.

talked with a guy last night, and we basically came up with tax plan that seems to be fair.

sales tax only.  on everything.

those who consume, buy larger stuff will pay more taxes.  people like warren buffet would pay their fair share.  those who want to conserve, make out better as the consumers pay for a higher percentage of stuff.

but this won't fly, we can't have poor people paying taxes, especially federal income tax, where 40% of the working population pay none.

Fair Tax knabe.  Then people get a prebate so they can buy essentials every month.

It would be a consumption tax.  Everything you buy would be taxed.  But the catch is that things are only taxed one time.  So if you buy a used car- No Tax.  Grow produce and sell what you don't eat- no income tax.

Can you imagine how much money that is currently stored in Caymen and other foreign banks would suddenly come back to our country

All those illegal people as well as tourists would also be contributing anytime they buy something.

So if you buy a used car- No Tax. wrong.  you pay a tax.

Grow produce and sell what you don't eat- no income tax.  so?  not many can do that nowadays.

Can you imagine how much money that is currently stored in Caymen and other foreign banks would suddenly come back to our country.  12 trillion by best estimates.

All those illegal people as well as tourists would also be contributing anytime they buy something.   illegals would be contributing MORE to pay for the more they take, thus more fair, tourists would be paying their fair share of infrastructure necessary to provide them something to tour.

the problem most people have with fair taxation, is that they want it to be unfair, to their benefit.  when everyone pays, they are less susceptible to bribes, ie reverse taxation.

I think Fluffer was agreeing with you on many points Knabe, and I think it would work really well....in a utopian society. Then again, socialism would work pretty well too if it didn't need capitalism.  Anyhow, pay for what you use, and don't pay for what others use. Seems like a good system to me.

I agree with many of you. One of my first thoughts was I could see an upcoming reality TV show coming. The woman is not married and lived with her parents in a very small house, from what I have heard through the media. She is in her mid-30s ( can't remember her actual age). I think the fingers of blame should be pointed at numerous people here. The woman who had all these kids, has to take most of it, but her parents, the Doctor who performed the fertility treatments, and who implanted 8 fertilized embryos in her( maybe there were more and only 8 stuck, I am not sure) needs to be smacked on the side of the head, the other medical people involved in this case all need to carry some blame.

I am thinking that this spring when it comes time to implant some bovine embryos, I am going to have my vet implant 8 or 10 in each recip and hope that only one sticks. Think this is a good idea?

I'll bet the reality shows will be lined up for this one!!  Can't you just see the Home Makover people go crazy about 14 separate bedrooms.  We might even have a "World's Dumbest Bachelor" program to find this gal a husband.

This is not always true. I saw a show about Warren Buffet and he is not a big spender. He drives an older Lincoln Town Car and still lives in the same house he has lived in forever and it was not very big at all and you would never think one of the richest men in the world lives there. So, I love the idea of the sales tax but think there will be those that don't pay their share in one way or another. Not matter what tax there is someone will try to find a way to circumvent paying their share.

And as to having a rule telling someone they can only have so many embryos implanted or how many kids they are allowed to have or anything along those lines it is just another step to more laws to how we live our lives. I however do not think that the government should help pay for any kind of fertility treatments at all. If you want a kid that bad adopt or shell out your own money to pay for all that.

Have all the kids that you want, but you better have a good way to support them.  Unfortunately, it looks like you, me, and everyone else that works will be picking up that bill.

i agree with many others on here...you shouldnt have kids unless you can financially afford to raise them yourself...if you want to have more but cant afford them....be a teacher!!!!  i have 151 kids....but only have to put one to bed every night...
