OK, so this might be "so what" to some of you but I have to toot my horn somewhere! ;D Our big district fair is next week (Ozark Empire Fair), and we have shown cattle there for going on 4 years now. As a past high school Ag teacher, I knew about the FFA and 4-H contests besides livestock, like a hay show and veggies and Ag projects (welding, wood,....). Anyway, they have a "hay show" in the open division, and I have followed it with interest. Last fall my husband and I took a hay class put on the by the extension, and we learned how easy it was to enter the hay show. I always get our hay tested every year, and to find out it is only .25 cents more to enter the fair (they submit the sample and test it the same as I did every year), so I decided to enter our hay. We grow a fescue/orchard/clover mix, nothing special in our area. But we do fertilize and take care of our land (put down new seed where it gets thin and test our soil very few years to make sure everything is good). We also Manage Intensive Graze (when we have RAIN and grass actually grows ). So guess what??? WE WON! We won the hay show!?!?!?!?!!! The biggest surprise I have ever had. <party> Now I have to take a large round bale up to the fairgrounds to put on display for the two weeks of the fair.
I am just flabbergasted! Now I REALLY wish I would not have sold part of it... we are going to need it if we do not get some rain soon!
