Am looking to attend an AI School and was looking for thoughts on which was the best.

Not sure where you are located.  I went to an ABS school in Kearney, Ne. Jon Herrick (sp?) was our instructor.  We had about 18 people and probably 35-40 cows.  Thought class was really good.  I know Jon puts on schools in NE and Kansas.  Not sure where else.  I would recommend him and his schools if you are in the area.

Probably should have mentioned I am located in Central Kansas.  I looked at one of Jon's schools in Manhattan, it looked pretty good.  I didn't see if CIDR insertion was covered and have also noticed some of the other AI schools included preg checking and Jons school, at least the one I looked at, did not include this.

A beginner AI school cannot begin to teach preg checking.  You'll need practice in thousands of cows before you can preg check accurately or safely.  Master the AI technique first and foremost.

BadgerFan is correct and that's why there are only four people in the United States who can preg check cows.  [/sarcasm]

I agree with badgerfan and carls.  Don't expect to learn how to palpate from a 3 or 4 day AI course.  You can teach a monkey to AI but palpation is a lot more difficult to learn and you can abort those early pregancies if you are not careful.

I have literally bred thousands of cows and I still prefer the BIO-PRYN blood test.  I know it's been talked about, but I think it's one of the best things to come along in a long time.

The best place to start would be to get in touch with a semen distributor in your area  like ABS or Genex.  They usually offer local AI courses.  I know that Genex lists the courses it offers on their website.  Take a look for yourself http://genex.crinet.com/page393/AITrainingClasses.  It looks like they offer courses in several locations on the East Coast.  Good luck and don't get discouraged!

My husband went to the Graham School in Garnett, KS. It lasts a full 5 days and teaches preg checking, breeds, animal health, nutrition, basics of doctoring and ends with AIing. My husband thought it was great all the different things he learned in a vast area of raising cattle but would have liked more time actually working on cows. They do allow anyone that takes their school to come back for a refresher course anytime. My husband followed up this school with a 2 day AI school from our Acc.Genetics rep and now he feels very comfortable AIing.
