I use to give two shots then heat detect. I also tried cidrs for a while but the last few years I have given one shot of lut and heat detect and breed. The cows that don't come in on first shot are given second shot of lut 11 days after first shot, heat detect and breed. This saves some money on shots but is more time consuming with heat checking.
I am a firm believer in giving GnRH at breeding. After the last couple of years of AI'ing at Chambero's, and see such good results on even the questionable heats. We use lutalyse in our operation. If an animal is not cycling at the time of the first shot of lut, then you will most likely not get any results on the second, unless the cow just naturally start cycling. Remember that the first heat is less fertile than the following heats.
Thanks for the mention of our website Brent
This program is very similar to one we use sometimes. You will run all the cows through the chute for the first shot, but if everything is cycling, you will only have to run 1/4 of them back through for a second shot. We wait around 6-7 days after the first shot to give our second shot. As long as you didn't miss a heat or a cow had a silent heat, the remaining 1/4 of the cows should come in after the second shot. We give GnRH at time of insemination then.
