I got to thinking about this deal. I don't care who approves of me or doesn't. But I think the evolution of the disscussion board was based on the genetic defect situation. There were a couple of dark years in the shorthorn breed where the uncertainy of the genetic defect actually took years off peoples lives. There was confusion between the th defect calf and pha defect calves. They were were both defects out of similar lines in a lot ways. The reason I became interested in the showsteer board was because defects were being discussed. I got the impression the powers that be shut down defect talk.l Alot of people came over here. It has been decided that defects are ok and I often wonder how many cows have given their lives for the great heatseeker bull but I still think a lot of the popularity of the boards were concerned with defect carriers and what not. Red was a big part of this deal. She was three times the person I could ever hope to be. But i have a great admiration for DL. She was behind the discussions. She literally got beat to hell on the showsteer board and on this board as well. She helped us (or at least me understand the defect deal). She got insulted and attacked and on and on and on but I think this discussion built the boards. I thought the steerplanet board was a joke for a year or two cause very few few people came on for a while. But this board is a success. I comend jason and whoever got this deal rolling. They had a vison and built this thing up from nothing. Red was a special part of this deal.I think alot of DL. Our politics don't match up but I would go to war with her in a heartbeat. The defect deal has kinda cooled off and there are two different camps on the deal now. Thats ok. It will be the young folks that carry this deal on like zak and on and on. Debate is so important. I think the disscussion board has educate so many people. We get concerned when people get after each other on this board. Thats nothing. In other countries people kill each other over politics. When the disscussion stops we are in trouble.jmo

February 08, 2008, 12:28:36 PM is when I started.  I have been a member of many different message boards, mainly to kill time when I should have been studying, but now this is the only one that I even bother to check.  It is a great place to discuss cattle and while some dont like it other things that come up.  Also the wealth of information on here is outstanding and the willingness of everyone to give it is great for people that are new to the business.  I have been blessed to meet some of the people from here and have enjoyed talking to all of them.  <beer>

I registered on Jan. 30, 2007 and I think I was # 279.  I came over from showsteers on an invite from our beloved RED - I sure miss her. :(

Without a doubt, Red was the most influential person on this board.  She went out of her way to welcome everyone that joined.

We also decided to take a laid back attitude in regards to what was posting, as long as it was not in bad taste.  Off-topic, on-topic, lots of discussions, heated discussions, along as it did not cross the line.  We also wanted to create a venue where people could buy/sell/promote for free.

The growth of steerplanet is due to all the great members.

Thanks for posting this!  Steerplanet.com is a well run site with outstanding people and topics.  We're 8 away from 4,000 members, and I bet there are 8 unregistered members reading posts as we speak.

I came across this site a few years ago when I was seaching the web trying to figure out what was going on with the ASA Secretary situation.  I got my information then moved on.  A few months later I was searching the web for defect information and found myself back at this site.  I was amazed at the depth of conversation that was taking place.  That same day I tried the search function out by putting in names of bulls I was interested in and WHAMO!!! I thought I found the holy grail!!!  I was a casual observer of the site until recently when I registered as a member so that I could ask questions and contribute.  I appreciate the experiences that are shared, and the members who take the time to source their facts/information/research in order to educate others.

Same here - January 30, 2007, 11:06:17 AM.  Red found me on either Showsteers or Cattle today, and invited me to look at SteerPlanet.  I never had the opportunity to meet Red.  She told me she remembered our family from the 1995 MA Jr. Nat'l.  How, I have no idea??

Cathy or Red as known asked me to come over. I would browse and skim and then joined. Zach you really missed out on a very special lady. She had to be one of the most accepting inviduals that I came across. She accepted people for who they were and not what others wanted them to be. Really a great lady. I have one of her cows in the barn and I think of her often. There will always be an empty space that is hers no matter what.RIP

I never got a chance to meet her face to face either, but there was no doubt of her kindness.  We really need to spearhead the Red scholarship and get it done.

Well off to bed, I will be out of town tomorrow, so won't be able to see 4000.  I will have to catch 5k.

I had the pleasure of meeting her in Spring 2008 at her home, and she had so much pride in her farm and their operation. One of the kindest people I've ever met.
