I want a ration that will not hold my steers back but will still allow them to have hair. My idea was to have a mix of oats corn beet pulp and some protein additives.

1/2 oats
1/8 corn
1/8 beet pulp
1/8 mfa protien
1/8 something else

I like what you're thinking...think about the $ you could save!

I'm afraid there is nothing in your ration to get one to gain.

You did say 1/8 something else......you may be onto something.

My only concern is staleness, how are you to combat holding him so as to no keep him fresh feeling and looking to the judge?

I thought that the oats may feed simaarlyvto corn and help steers to grow the same also. I could take tat 1/8 something else and change it to 1/4 corn if oats don't promote growth. but then it may burn hair.... Mystery

You'll need to plug in your #s and figure out the nutritional requirements of your calf to make sure that you can get the amount of growth that you are wanting out of your project.

Making feed usually requires some work with a nutritionist. I would go to your local elevator and talk with them about what you want to accomplish. They will also have some ration ideas that have ingredients for your area. Feed rations have to be balanced for the calf to grow and perform. You can work the hair to get it.

I plugged your mix into my ration balancer and assuming the ration is 1/4 corn and the protein pellet is a commercial 34%, the ration comes out to be 13.2% protein As-Fed.  That is just a little high. Most of your brand name show finishers are 11.5 or 12% protein As-Fed.  You are also correct on the amount of corn.  Most brand name show finishers have 250-400# of corn per ton.  If your mill has soybean hulls or corn gluten feed and liquid molasses, with the other ingredients you listed, you can make a great show feed and save a lot of money.  If you want a little bit of help with this feel free to PM me.
