Got a call from my guy who helps me out with Embryo's. He said hey, got a surprise for you. That embryo you stuck in, you got Triplets. Bad news one did not make it still born, but all three are heifers and the twins look great. 50#'s a peice. I will get some pictures up but I thought it was pretty special for an embryo to split not just once but twice. I feel bad about loosing one, but the other are healthy. I am going to go and see them in the next week.

Have any of you had this happen?

He said all three were red with white spots. Get some pics and I will let you know. i am sure they are identical since we didn't stick all three we had left in at the same time. ;)

We just got into the ET deal a couple years ago. So this is really new for us. How common is it for embryo's to split? This batch of eggs is turning out to be a pretty good investment. Out of four eggs we have gotten 5 calves.

I had a buddy in FL who put in an embryo & got 2 heifers.  Sold them for over $5,500 or $6,000 each... can't remember exactly, but he was awfully happy!

I have had two sets of identical twin heifers from an implanted embryo in the past 5 years. I have heard of a few more, but I have not heard of triplets before. How do triplets happen anyway? I can see that the embryo splits once will result in 2 identical twins. To get three, the orginal embryo would have to split once and then one of the resulting embryos would have to split again... while the other one would not. Does this make sense?

About two or three years ago, the big sale they ahve in Texas at Hereford ranch Donor's Unlimited they had a set of triplet heifers sell as lot one. From what I understand and have learned egg has to split twice. The heifers all three were red with white spots. I haven't been able to see them because they are at another farm. I am going to try and see them over the weekend. Will update with pictures.
Cathy- Jake and his dad were so shocked. They said they have never seen anything like it. At first he was disappointed as he thought I had lost a calf, the first one being still born. But the second one came shortly after and Jake said the cow didn't act right and pop came the other one. I can't wait to see them.
SD- they are subsitituing milk to one from bottle but both are eating and from what i understand is trying her best to feed them.
