I may have an opportuity to buy a couple of loads of PB Angus pairs at a good price.  I haven't seen the pedigrees on the cows yet but am wondering how important clean pedigrees would be if the cows are going to be bred Simmental?  If you were buying a 1/2 blood heifer or bull calf would the pedigree of the cow (Angus) be important to you as it relates to the defects the Angus breed is currently working through?

I cross Angus cows with Limousin bulls, so I see why you are asking.  The thing is, we are already having to test our 1/2 bloods to see if these calves have the defects.  So, with that being said, you have to decide how good of a deal the cows are if they are carriers of the genetic defects.  Myself would rather start with a clean cow and not risk it.  There are plenty of good Angus cows out there that are not dirty.  You can bet the first really good calf you get out of a dirty cow will test bad, or that would be my luck.

If yiu are buying angus cattle by the truckload your probably not going to be able to get much pedigree info other than generalities.  I'd like to know where they are coming from, but unless they tell you straight out they are coming from carrier genetics (which you should ask just for the sake of it), I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Buying in bulk tells me you are probably just looking for good solid cows.  If the price is right, jump on them.  I'll bet you we can't hardly afford females in a year or two.
