How early is to early to start working with a calf? We have a bull calf that my daughter may show, he is not very old but came out the door pushing 100 lbs. and is growing like a weed. The first few days you could walk right up to him and pet all over him. He does not seem to be wild, but after the week in the pasture with the other calves he no longer feels like being cuddled. I have not tried to halter him yet, but I feel like once he is haltered he will likely not be to much of a problem but I could be fooled. I didn't know if anyone has had problems with starting to early, whether it be by injuring the calf or having negative reactions from starting at to young of an age.

We usually start halter breaking some calves at a month old but you can actually start at about weeks there isn't really a specfic time. We have never had any problems when halter breaking calves that are youngsters

My Mom usually slips a halter on when they are coming out the birth canal!  Kidding, of course, but it is not unusual for her to put a halter on when they are a week old. She does not try to pull them around, only shows them it's nothing to be afraid of. You can do this for a few minutes a day and just rub and scratch them. After a while they think nothing of it.
