Anyone ever see a frost flower (NC)

Another awesome wonder of MO, we were driving to church this morning, and found tons of these growing around plants. It got down below freezing last night, and this is what happens to plants. I wish we would have taken a picture of them on a plant, but it was the first time we have ever seen frost flowers and we were so excited we decided to take a few pics of them after we picked them. The first photo is one we laid on the asphalt, and the other is one my daughter took. I think they are a wonderful product of nature!

Can you explain what is all going on?  Is this a plant that only flowers after freezing or is this ice from around the flower?  Sorry if they are stupid questions I have just never seen or heard of such a thing.
