If we can talk about Ft Worth already, I guess we can talk about Denver too!!

The Worth County(Iowa) Beef Team will be taking a whole busload of cattle enthusiasts out and be there on Jan 17-19th.  This will be a mixed group of youth and adult cattle enthusiasts. We have several people signed up from outside our county as well.    We will leave north Iowa on Friday, Jan. 16th, travel down to Des Moines on I35 and then west on I80 and on to Nebraska and Colorado.  We'll be returning via the same route on the 20th.  Educational stops will include Pfizer vaccine plant in Lincoln and another yet to be determined  stop on the return trip.  We'll be staying  in Paxton, NE the first and last nights of the trip which means we'll have two dinners at Ole's as well as two breaksfasts.  That alone might be worth the trip!!  We plan to spend 2 nights(Marriott Courtyard) and 3 days in Denver at the Stock Show beginning with the rodeo on the 17th.  This is the weekend that most of the display bulls are there, the Shorthorns, Maines, and Herefords have their shows, and countless other interesting events and shows are held.

If anyone along the route would like to go with us, we still have a few seats availabe--at least right now. We made a similar trip four years ago and it was an extremely fun, educational, and very reasonable trip.  If you'd like more details just send me a PM.

oakbar... now that sounds like fun!!!  Could you swing around my way? Would you possibly have room for a few head of critters as well? I was just filling out my Denver entries and saw your post. Maybe we will have to have a SP gathering in Denver as well.

I'll be there. Never can tell what days I'll show up though. Won't be bringing any cattle though. Too inexperienced for that.  :( Anyway, I'll be looking cattle over. I'll make sure to have something on that says Cade or MYT cattle. I'll probably be wearing a CSU Livestock Judging cap as well.

Well these arent my bulls, these folks are wanting to win the pen of three, and their bulls are good enough but they are barely giving them  2.5 lbs of grain a day and havent even thought about getting them broke.

Yea, I know how that goes.  I still have a bull that needs to get halter broke, but at one year old I dont think that it is going to happen.

Ni kidding! We now have coming 4 year olds that I don't think are going to get broke.  :D

You laugh, but I know a couple people from Australia that break 2 year old bulls every year and show them!  I personally like to have my heifers broke before they calve, but to each their own!  (lol)

You also know someone who broke a 22 month old bull just a few weeks ago.  That bull is currently at the NAILE.  If it wasn't for breaking them at the last second, I might never have a showstring.  ;)

I have halter broke many two year old bulls over the years for bull sales. I find that many times, they are easier to halter break than calves are. When we had Charolais, we always halter broke the bulls as coming two year olds and I never had one that we couldn't take to a sale.  This week I haltered a coming two year old Shorthorn bull for the first time. I could not believe it when he did not even pull on the rope. I left him tied up for about 8 hours and then let him loose for the night. The next morning I lead him to the chute and trimmed his head and he stood better than any other animal I have been working with. Two days later, he is leading like he has been shown all his life.

Age is not always a factor in how easy they will halter break.

Good Point. Here, we like to break all the calves at weaning when we have them all close anyway. For about a week, we let them drag a halter for about 2 or 3 hours each day. Pretty soon, they start to learn to give to pressure when we ask them to move. Got 9 or so to do this fall. Just our purebred calves and some heifers of mine. Well, take that back. Then we'll break another 5 or 6 steers. So that means we'll have to come up with more halters!
