I had two calves born to 2 completely different dams (Unstoppable and Meyer). The sires were Set Me Free and I-80. These two calves were on time, actually in both cases 1-2 days past 283 gestation. Both calves were extrememly small ( 35 and 38 lbs.) Look normal, no monkey mouth, great structure, walk like prince's (both bull calves), came out and were eating from mother in under 15 minutes. I would say the Unstoppable is most likely a carrier, so that is why I bred her to a supposedly clean bull (Set Me Free). The calves are 1 month old and about 50 lb. All of the other calves that were born to clubby sires are normal weights ( 75-100 lb). My cows are probably over-conditioned. I don't like to see ribs showing. In the winter they get all of the good hay they can eat and protein/mineral tub. In summer they only get grass and mineral blocks. Any one have any ideas as to what is going on. By the way, the unstoppable's first calf to Jesse James was a normal 60 lb. calf that is now 1350 lb. at 20 months. thnking about testing these 2 cows. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
