If this doesn't get you stirring not sure what else will.
It's theBattle Hymn of the Republic by the Army Band for the Pope.

I heard it first on Rush Limbaugh. I could have cried. My great- great grandfather was present at the White house when it was first played for Lincoln. He was a Major General in the Union Army. Sorry you southerns!

My father used to wake us kids up early in the morning by blasting this on his record player.  Somewhere along the lines I lost my love for the song along with Stars and Stripes Forever (John Phillip Sousa).  LOL!  Anyway, I think this has a GREAT history. Many people actually think this is a hymn but it is more of a patriotic anthem.  It was written by Julia Ward Howe who was actually a social activist and abolitionist in the mid 1800's.  It originally had six verses but the third verse was eliminated when it was placed in Christian hymnbooks.  The tune is actually from a camp meeting song and the "Glory Hallelujah" refrain was added around 1856.  This was also used as the Union marching song, "John Brown's Body".  Julia Ward Howe was a Unitarian and wrote this as a partisan Unionist during the beginning of the Cival War. The "Battle Hymn" is actually religious war propaganda.  The likening of the "Battle Hymn" to the bible and Christianity is largely due to Howes failiarity with the Bible and her use if imagery. In the judgement of many Christians this song is actually considered to be blasphemous.  Personally I think the song is wonderful in terms of it's historical significance.  If you get an opportunity look it up online and read more about its history.

here's a link regarding the blasphemy

http://www.lewrockwell.com/vance/vance84.html

lewrockwell jr. has an interesting link to cindy sheehan, as they were supposedly romantically linked.  rockweeld mises institute are linked.  rockwell was the one who supposedly wrote the letters for ron paul that raised a semi scandal as being racist.

what's also interesting, is that one time i was investigating property taxes and the government subsidizing housing in the form bonds to cover costs not covered by developers and i ran into this guy on that site, and he works at the hoover institute.  he one time got involved with sam farr or someone, and got some development or funding stopped cold at a community meeting.
here's a link to that story

it got me involved in local politics and writing letters to the editor

here's his page

david is the one who gave me the link to the bastiat

Known that song for a long time but I will always remember about 30 years ago when as a freshman in high school I was chosen to sing in one of the choirs at our county music festival.  This is an annual event that features 3 choirs, elementary school, juniior high and high school, along with two concert bands, junior high and senior high.  That year the finale was Battle Hymn of the Republic.  It began with one drummer and one trumpet and concluded with both bands playing while all three choirs (~500 voices) sang.  I get the goosebumps just thinking of it.

Also to Common Sense, careful forgetting about Stars and Stripes by JPS!!  As a former Sousa Award Winner from high school, I may get offended. (lol)

If only God's truth were marching on.  In reality I believe that it is, but too many people are missing the parade.
