Beef Feeder Show

I would like to ask a couple questions about the Beef Feeder Steer Show at your County or State Fair.

1.  What is the weight range, for the calves, to be allowed to show at your fair?  i.e. 350lbs - 600lbs.

2.  What date do your calves have to be dehorned and castrated?  At validation/ear tagging/weigh-in, or the fair?  Or don't they have to be dehorned and/or castrated?

No weight limit at our fair, all based on birthday.

Rule is no bull calves so I guess they could be cut the day before the fair and be ok.  No rules on horns.

In possession and castrated dehorned etc  by June 1
Our county fair is always the week of Labor Day in september.
The calves have to have shots and tagged by a local vet the third week of August. IF the calves are not tagged with official tags they are DQ'd at the county. WEigh in on the first day and break by weights. Our largest was in the 700#'s and the smallest was in the 350# range.

OH one more thing. Because our fair is so late they were going to try computer tagging in the up coming year like we do with our steers so you couldn't go to another county or else where and buy a winner. Our fat steers are tagged in January with computer chip that is scanned at weigh in's in September.

How do you prove date of birth?  When you have a rule such as...Calf must be born before January 1st.  Especially, when dealing with crossbred cattle, and beef feeder steers ????

Same way you know how a purebred heifer is born on the birth date given on the registration papers, you DON'T/CAN'T prove it.  You just have to trust that it is what they are telling you it is.
