Best return on investment?

If you had $20,000 or more to invest in the purebred genetic business, where do you think the best ROI would be? Slow and steady building a cowherd? investing in an elite donor / elite bull? How do the bull syndicates / exclusive semen rights generally perform? What do y’all think?

Yes, good point now that I think about it. Whats your thoughts on exclusive semen sales rights in other countries? I try to watch this but seems you do not see enough calves registered to justify what the partner laid out in $$?

Yes, good point now that I think about it. Whats your thoughts on exclusive semen sales rights in other countries? I try to watch this but seems you do not see enough calves registered to justify what the partner laid out in $$? How many bulls have you been involved? and do you raise cattle? with Semen rights in other countries are going to come from a national Champion etc bull $20000 aint gonna make you much O0

Mark, brings up a good point. Finding a good donor worth the money is difficult. Worry about the cow end and forget the bull end of the spectrum. Selling semen isn't an easy task and if you don't have experience selling semen then that's not where you need to put your money or time. If you find a good donor you still have to flush the donor and those costs add up very quickly. Fact is, there is a lot that goes into any option and you have to evaluate your risk tolerance and what kind of upside you want.
Simple Answer: If I was starting over I would focus on recips and eggs. If I could find a donor worth the money I would do the donor/recip combination but realize you are betting a lot on that donor. You better be right. Buying different set of eggs at least lets you diversify some risk genetically.

or, buy eggs from multiple donors that have looks you like, especially if you buy them from a different production resource environment.

bulls for semen are waste of time, semen storage on semen that never sells, endless discussions of a bull might hit, never does, need to keep it out of the market because someone will get something over on you and you end up with is a bunch of storage on bulls that will not even cover their collection fee, let alone the hot air discussing keeping semen locked up because 20 years from now, some one might buy it and get a hit and they never do.

probably there will be crickets of stories (irish whiskey, ali exceptions) of more than 20 stories of someone getting something over on someone because they sold semen, made a better bull and made more money off that bull rather than other sales.

there are very few semen sales bulls and the bull studs are full of semen that never sells, bargain sales etc.

if you don't focus on the bull, you don't have to focus on the bull, because you will have to replace him anyway.

bulls are mostly a waste of time and money for anything other than breeding.
