Braunvieh is a pure breed, actually may be one of oldest breeds on earth with records dating back to 800 BC, and come from the swiss alps. The Brown Swiss was developed off the Braunvieh around 1800 and now they are not genetically similar at all, except the color. The Braunvieh aren't a cross of any kind, but are cousins to Gelbvieh. Today nearly 40% of all cattle in Switzerland are Braunvieh.

I hope that helps!!!

I was told by the genetics professor who has done alot of work on Braunviehs the part about them being the beef version of Brown Swiss's. I was also told that there is no relation to gelbviehs in any way. Not trying to smart off, just relaying what I have been told by people who have been primary in promoting them here in the south.

Let me rephrase, since I was incorrect before....Braunvieh and Gelbvieh come from the same region, not cousins but neighbors!!  I'm happy to hear folks know what they are!

I think the braunvieh have a lot to offer the commercial cattleman. The ones I have worked with are gentle, easy to handle and PRODUCTIVE.

My only concern is that when bred to red cows, they will throw brindle colored calves, and that is a kiss of death in the show ring, and sale barn ring.

You know, we had a ShorthornPlus heifer this last year that had just a little brindle color down her top. A couple judges commented on it, but we did surprisingly well with her. I really like Braunvieh cows though, and the calves have wicked good bone and thickness from what I've seen.  That's also a very nice 2 year old IMO.

The Brahman/Gelbvieh cross is typically known as a Gelbray. Good looking animals though!
