Hey guys, I just wanted to run something  by some of you.  We have some very nice Maine/Angus cows, and have been breeding for show calves.
However, before we started I really like some of the Braunviehs.  We really thought of just raising them, but went BLACK instead.  I know alot of steer guys especially here in TX that have said NO on the Braunviehs for show steers or heifers!

I saw an ad in the Showbox that had a couple Braunvieh sires, would we get a American that would compete well if we bred our cows say to a awesome Braunvieh?  We would like something that could be registerd.  I think the Braunvieh females are pretty nice!  And there are no cuter things than those babies.

One of the bulls were JOLT and the other is owned by a very nice guy here in Texas that sire is SILVERADO>
Just something I wanted some of your thoughts on . . .
THANKS <cowboy>

I doubt that you would get a calf that would classify american. Braunvieh cattle don't have any brahman in them contrary to what most think, instead they are basically the beef version of the Brown Swiss dairy cattle and they originally came from Switzerland. they have excellent carcass traits and are great in the feedlots especially when you retain ownership. Basically unless you are going to aim for feedlot cattle that will excel on the rail i wouldn't be breeding them to Maine/Angus for showy type animals.

The braunviehs will work for making american crosses.  There have been many champion american cross calves that had braunvieh in them.  some of the more prominent breedres of american crosses use them.  The Silverado is one of the best bulls to ever surface in the braunvieh breed heck any breed for that matter.  Semen is closed on him I think.

Braunvieh cross cattle have had success in the show ring, expecially in the american deal, however you would not get an american calf crossing your braunvieh to the cows you have.

Ok so what bull suggestions would give us a few awesome calves that would give us some good colors and CLASS as American?

You would have to try Brangus or Simbra. I would use a Brangus bull. Brangus/Maines work real well.

The advice is going to be slim because you're sort of going at it backward from the normal method which involved American cows.  For example, those Braunvieh bulls will throw some killer American calves but need the Brahman influence from the bottom side.

We now clean up our clubby cows with a JDH Brahman bull to get heifers that will work as a base for clubby bulls.

This is exactly rt, and a good way to go about doing things, if you want to get into the American deal.

Here is a bull that might work for what your wanting.  I am not much of a brangus fan, but this is one of the most impressive mature bulls of any breed I have ever seen.  He is closed for registered cattle but, you can buy semen for commercial cattle.  His name is Hercules and he won Houston in 2008.

You'd need to almost use purebred Brahman.  The Collins family in Chilton bought some black cows from us a few years ago and I know they use their purebred Brahman bulls on them and get some steers that are placing in majors out of them.

But most of the time the best American-X calves are coming out of show steer bulls on American-X cows.

If you really want good advice on it talk to Charles Schroeder in Taylor.  He's dominanted the American-X steer business for forever.

If you want a Braunvieh influence with a little Brahman influence as well, try Simbravieh....La Muneca Cattle Co. in Linn,Tx have a great set of bulls.....also on ABC cows try American Gangster...really great phenotypically...he is 1/2 Charolais and 1/2 Steiner Brangus...Airhart Cattle Co......eagerly awaiting a calf from him out of a Star 5 heifer.
