I'm an 18 year old kid who needs to spend some money before i head off to college so i can have some income coming in while im there. Looking for some open heifers to buy that aren't too spendy, but of good quality to produce show calves dwon the road.  Looking for some preferably somewhere around the Sioux City area of Iowa.  Really anywhere around and private or open sales would be perfect. Thanks!!

You're not too far from Dunlap & Denison, Iowa. Call John Schaben @ Dunlap or Tom/JR. Pauley @ Denison & tell them what you are wanting and they can get something put together for you. There'll be some very good strings of heifer calves moving through those barns here in the next maonth. They should be able to give you a good idea as to what good replacement type heifers will cost you.

I'm finding bred cows to be cheap now.  Would get you a two year jump start on calves to sell-

Something to think about-

Good luck!

I agree with this statement. You can buy cows with 3/5 years left in them and get return quickly while the market is hopefully still hot. Way better money makin deal IMO.

I have to agree with their statements! I wouldn't waste my money on an open heifer when you can get a good cow already bred. If you buy an open heifer you will be putting in the money to feed and what not, then you will have to wait to breed them. I would go with something that has had at least 2 calves or 3 calves. You will still have several good years to go with them.

There are good bred cows out there but most are sold for a reason. Low milk production, Too much milk, hard time calver, genetic problems, can't hold their body weight etc... Just be sure the seller is a reputable breeder. In the long term I would go with the heifers bred or open. Most heifers are kept because they are the best of the crop, and most cows are sold because they aren't the best in the herd. Either way good Luck!

I have to agree. Find a reputable breeder. If you go to a reputable breeder they don't want to sell crap cattle because it will ruin their reputation. Hoover Dam Angus is out your way. I don't know how close but contact them too. Very nice people to talk to. They do have a sale coming up but there cattle in the sales go way more than what you are probably willing to spend. The sale is February 7th. Wouldn't hurt If you want to go the Angus route. Here is the Angus Association website. You can look through this for sales. http://www.angus.org/ Good luck in what you decide.
