I recently had a calf that was born halfway between the AI service date and what would be the date the Clean up bull would have bred the cow. How do I go about DNA testing the calf? Or is there other ways to tell who the dad is? Thanks.

Does your breed association have a DNA Kit?

The Hereford Association has this:

DNA Work: (charged before each animal is processed). Please furnish registration number and purpose for DNA-typing, such as for AI, ET, Parentage, etc.
$40.00    --

I think this maybe alot higher prices though: http://www.bovigen.com/sire_trace.htm

The AI Sire is a Registered Angus and clean up bull is a Chi-Angus. Does anyone know if the angus association has a DNA test? I looked on their website and couldnt find anything.
Thanks for your help.

For what it may be worth here -- I am beting that you have a slightly pre-mie Chi-Angus calf, instead of a 10-12 day late Angus calf. 80 pounds doesn't sound like a late calf in today's averages, but may be slight light for a full term Chi-Angus calf. Was it a bull or a hfr calf -- if it was a bull and was late -- well I'd for sure go the clean up route to start with.

Course I can't see you cows -- that would make a differnece to me!

Good luck with your quest -- shouldn't be too hard to figure out!

I think the AA will dna for parentage verification.  This, from their site:  "  Breeders who need to determine parent verification on an animal will collect a blood sample from the animal and place a drop on a card provided by the Association.  The breeder will submit the sample directly to MMI Genomics for processing.  The results of the DNA test are then returned to the Association’s member services department for official recording and then provided to the member.".  I'd say, to be sure, to go ahead and dna to the Angus sire.  If it comes back that he's not the sire, you know the Chi isand vice versa.  You can go to www.angus.org, search on the site for "dna test", scroll down to "MMI Genomics ...".

Log in to the AAA and you can handle this online from ordering FTA cards, to filling out sample submission form, to tracking and viewing results.  Run the bulls registration and it will show if he was blood-typed if not you will need to do him as well as calves in question.  I end up with a couple of these out of a calving ease bull I use for cleanup that has a super short gestation length and breeding a high BW cow to a calving ease AI sire or a low BW cow to a high BW bull AI.

The Chi association is really easy. You can pull tail hair and send it in. I don' t like to stick anything unless I have to. They will DNA hair. You can also go the Maine association and order the kit as well. I think it is 30 bucks.
