I have a couple heifers that were born in February that seem to hit the nail on the head as far as genetics go. I was wondering how some of you start your calves (when you start giving them grain, what works what doesn't, etc).

I bring the cow and calf up and start feeding the cow. Momma will teach the baby to eat. Once the baby starts eating, I will separate them during the day and feed the calf. At night I put the pair back together and feed the cow. Baby eats during the day, in the evening with the cow and gets all the milk it wants. You'd be surprised how fast you can get one to grow doing this. And don't be afraid to do it until the calf is 8 or 9 months old if you have that kind of time. They will grow tremendously.
